Fried Green Tomatoes
Claimed to be “ā€¦one of the best feature films of its timeā€¦”-(Wikipedia), released on December 27th, 1991, running for 136 minutes, Fried Green Tomatoes made over $199,418,501 at the box office. The film is based on the original novel; Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop CafĆ©, 1987, by Fannie Flagg, which contained controversial content making it a difficult and risky task for director and producer ā€˜Jon Anvet. Starring Kathy Bates as Evelyn Couch, Jessica Tandy as Ninny Theadgoode, Mary Stuart Masterson as Idgie Threadgoode, and Mary-Louise Parker as Ruth Jamison; all four actress did an exceptional job at conveying the captivating characters. It was nominated for a number of awards and honours at the 64th Annual Academy Awards, including Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Jessica Tandy), and Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium. Fried Green Tomatoes is comedy-drama film that followed two stories; one including a disjointed time sequence that was set in 1920s America, during the Great Depression, and is about two young women who have an inseparable friendship before one is forced to move interstate. The second fragment, that flashes in and out, is set in the 1980s and follows a friendship in which a housewife who is unhappy with her life, befriends an old lady in a nursing home and is enthralled by the tales she tells of people she used to know. It raises an eyebrow to some really astounding issues of both times, including racism and sexism, in which the main characters were affected profoundly.

The main characters throughout the film display an intriguing array of behaviours as they work through their own personal hardships in life, and discover who they really are. Idgie Threadgoode is a witty and compassionate character who stands up for what she believes in; accepting people for who they are and not what they look like, how they dress, where they come from or how much money they have. With short blonde hair, Idgie is a bit of a tomboy who has a knack for gambling and fishing. She has a need for her own independence and freedom, but unfortunately this sometimes a take a toll on the people who are closest to her, but despite this they continue to support her. Idgie is a skilled communicator who falls in love with Ruth. Ruth Jamison is best known for her sweet personality and fascinating beauty. She teaches Vacation Bible School in Alabama while staying with the Threadgoodes. She falls in love with Idgie and keeps her steady before she has to separate with her and to move back to Georgia (she moves out of town in the film instead) to marry Frank

Bennet, the man she was sworn to. She is a strong character and a positive role model for women. She experiences many troubles in her life, for example, being married to an abusive man and having to raise a child alone, while suffering from cancer. Ninny Threadgoode
