Is it fair when a highly skilled worker gets denied a job because the employer hires an illegal immigrant that he can pay half the price. You are probably saying no, but the truth is that it is happing all over America everyday. We are being called the “Nation of Immigrants” (Tim Kane, Ph.D.) by many because illegal immigration is at an all time high. Members of both the Senate and the House of representatives have recognized this and are trying to craft a comprehensive law during this session of Congress. While others are taking the more favored approach they have been doing over the past 30 years and that is just neglecting the problem. While neglect has not really worked over the past few decades it still seems to be the favorite to most politicians, but as of now it is no longer tolerable because mass amounts of illegal immigrants are flooding into America every year. This is because many different factors. In 1986 President Ronald Reagan passed an amnesty act legalizing every illegal immigrant in America. Through this over 4 million immigrants gained citizenship but in hope of it happing again more immigrants come to America. Also David Ray, a spokesman for the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), says the biggest barrier to solving the problem is “the indisputable absence of all interior immigration law enforcement.” By that he means once most illegal immigrants manage to get over the border and into the U.S., theyre home free (Jon E. Dougherty). Furthermore some reformers and political analysts believe the immigration problem worsened after Congress and the Clinton administration approved the North American Free Trade Agreement, also know as NAFTA. Under terms of the agreement, which was made between the U.S., Canada and Mexico, barriers to free-flow of trade in goods and services vanished. So too did years of rules and regulations which helped protect American consumers (Jon E. Dougherty). This allowed more open borders that they believe led to more illegal immigrants coming to America. According to the last U.S. Census, there are more than 7 million illegal immigrants in this country with Mexicans accounting for two-thirds of that number, with almost 700,000 more pouring over the border each year. Combined with the legal immigrants, they are gradually turning the United States into a multilingual and multicultural nation. (William Rusher) Meanwhile, they and their children including those born here, who are automatically American citizens, are overloading the welfare and educational facilities of the states, especially California, to the breaking point. On one hand, the presence of so many aliens is a powerful testament to the attractiveness of America. On the other hand, it is a sign of how dangerously open our borders are which is making both migration and terrorism much easier. Typical illegal aliens come to America primarily for better jobs and in the process add value to the U.S. economy. However, they also take away value by weakening the legal and national security envi¬ronment. When three out of every 100 people in America are undocumented or rather docu¬mented with forged and faked papers there is a huge security problem (Tim Kane, Ph.D.). Actually breaking the law has become the normal thing for most undocumented immigrants, which makes the job of terrorists and drug traffickers infinitely easier. Lou Dobbs, a reporter for CNN, recently reported that 33 percent of our prison population is no comprised of non-Citizens. Even though they pose no direct security threat, the presence of millions of undocumented migrants distorts the law and in fact creates a cover for terror¬ists and criminals. Not only does it cause a worry for the law, the middle class Americans are also under attack. They are paying tens of billions of dollars in social services for illegal immigrants. In a recent report 42 percent of illegal aliens are on welfare (Lou Dobbs). We are all having increased taxes rates because not only does illegal immigrants get free health care but also free education. At school the children are under a certain code where they are permitted to get free
