The Shining
As part of our English program, my classmates and I watched “The shining”, a movie directed by Stanley Kubrick in 1980. Although we haven’t seen the final part of the movie yet and horror is not my favorite genre, this could be listed as one of my favorite movies. In fact, the intricate development of the story caught my attention for most of the time and had several moments of suspense.
On the upcoming of the winter season, a married couple moves to an isolated hotel in a mountainous region with their son, Danny. While working on his writing project, his father Jack is also taking care of the hotel during the off-season. This job puts him and his family in a peculiar situation; in the hotel’s past there have been some crimes and, he was told, it is known to be a dangerous place for the family because of the presence of some vagabond spirits.
On the other hand, his son and wife Wendy are not aware of this fact. Moving from their small and simple house to a big hotel is exciting for them. Although in the very beginning of the movie, Danny is scared to move to the hotel. In fact, he just had a vision from his “imaginary friend” Tony: he saw two twin girls and an elevator with blood flowing out of it like a river flooding from the other side of the door; he just had “the shining moment.”
The first day at the hotel is both exciting and, as we find out from the words of the wife, scary because of its strange quietness and loneliness. As the time goes by, the family finds a routine and enjoys their new home. Coming back to Danny, the young boy met Dick, a custodian who is much older than him.
