America Is the Land of the Free: The Draft Is Slavery
America was founded on life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Liberty is the term in that clause that means the most to me. Dictionary.com states that Liberty is the freedom from restriction or control. The draft violates or right to liberty. The draft would make us subject to government control by dictating our future. Implementation of a military draft would be wrong, because it takes away our natural rights, it would lower the level of performance of our military, and we should not be in this position in the first place.
As stated before, liberty is our natural right. The draft would not give a choice, it would either be go, or serve time. During the war in Vietnam, it would start with all males ages 18.5 to 25 oldest first. According to “www.sss.gov,” the Selective Service system randomly chooses you by your birthday, and if you are chosen you must report to the service within 193 days. At first, males are drawn through a lottery after their 20th birthday, and would be drafted by priority group with 20 being the highest priority until age 26. It is not a situation in which you can get the letter and then decline the inferences. You must go and fulfill this duty, or like in the original draft there would be consequences. In this situation you get punished for your own free will, if it does not go with what the government wants. In a way the draft is like slavery, because you are chosen through a lottery, and forced to do work for an amount of time that you have no control over. Liberty is nowhere in this situation and makes it seem as if the foundation of the United States is not truly what it has been made out to be.
Also, I think that without the military being completely voluntary, soldiers would not meet the level of performance that they could have. For example, my baseball coach had to make a decision over who was going to pitch in a very close game. He had the choice between two very good pitchers. I did not want to pitch, however my counterpart did. My coach put me in to pitch first, and I blew it. However, he still had time to put my teammate in the game and he performed very well. Your heart and soul is not in something that you do not want to do. A soldier who voluntarily joins the military would perform better because their heart and soul are into what they are doing.
The most important issue that we
