Ethics is significant in medicine because it affects the way people believe about certain medial procedures and treatments. There are six main principles commonly recognized with Medical Ethics. These terms are autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice. Its important to have autonomy because it gives the patient rights to their own body and health. Beneficence is also important because we as patients bestow the right upon medical professionals to order treatments according to his or her professional opinion. Since they are highly knowledgeable in the way our bodies function, patients put their lives in the hands of their doctors to bring them back to good health. As a medical doctor, having the opportunity to make life or death decisions should in turn carry great responsibilities. Conversely, non-maleficence is another pillar in the major ethical principles. Patients would want their doctors to keep them from further harm. Non-maleficence goes hand in hand with Beneficence because the basic principle of going to receive medical attention is to improve your state of health.
Equally, justice plays a part under the ethics framework because its a problem doctors face when deciding who may receive treatment. There could be situations where theres not enough medicine, equipment etc. to treat patients. This is where we rely on doctors making ethical decisions based on their best judgments where there may be controversial deciding factors. In the medical world, patients deserve the right to be treated with dignity and respect. Dignity means to be treated with value and importance, which is a basic human right. Despite, all the things that make us different, we are all essentially human, and it is this common bond that we share that is the basis of treating a person (in this case a patient receiving treatment) with equality and in a manner in which reflects his or her wishes. Honesty is an important factor in ethics because a patient would want to know the truth about their state of health. This is important because the doctors answer determines how a patient may choose treatment and or, makes changes in their life that will affect their health.
A current controversial ethical issue is abortion. Abortion is the termination of a human pregnancy. This is a common ethical issue because every individual has his or her own morals and values, which determine whether abortion is morally acceptable. Some say abortion is ethical because the mother of the embryo or fetus is autonomous. Therefore, she should be able to make the decision of terminating the pregnancy. However, some individuals say that the father should also be able to make the decision since it is equally theirs. The main
