Audience Analysis Activity
Having taken public speaking class in college, you know how important it is to analyze the audience you will be addressing. To prepare for your speech, you have arranged a telephone interview with the clubs president to find out more about your audience.
List the two most important questions you want to ask the president about demographics of your audience? The 2 most important are (1) Identifying the general demographic features of my audience, and (2) gauging the importance of those features to a particular speaking situation.
Meaning I need to learn about your audience by asking the person who is inviting me to tell me a little about my audience. That way its easier to identify demographic traits such as age, gender, sexual orientation, religion, group membership, and racial, ethnic, or cultural background.
And the two most important questions you want to ask about the situational traits of your audience. Be specific in your questions and explain your choice of questions?
The two most important in situational traits are (1) identifying traits of the audience unique to the speaking situation. (2) Adapt my speech so it will be clear and convincing to the listeners.
When identifying traits I need to include the size of the audience, attitudes, the physical setting, and how they feel toward the topic. Adapting is like putting myself in their place..
Like the book said. The three questions to keep in mind: To whom am I speaking? What do I want them to know, believe, or do as a result of my speech? What is the most effective way of composing and presenting my speech to accomplish that aim?
