The effects on a family with an incarcerated person have an effect on everyone in the family but I believe it has the most effect on the children. Daddy or Mommy has been arrested and is thrown into a world unknown to them. All of a sudden the childs life has drastically changed. Where is daddy? I want to see my daddy!! Young children do not understand why daddy is no longer a part of their everyday routine.
The family is now out of sorts. They have now not only lost their main source of income but they no longer have the companionship, the financial security nor the everyday challenges of life itself that they will now have to handle on their own.
A lot of parents who have been put in jail do not want their child to visit them, even though the child feels they have been abandoned, because they are afraid that it will upset them or even make it harder because they do not understand why they are in a little room, and sitting across from them is their parent behind a glass where they can hear them but cannot touch them.
Another effect is that of the incarcerated childs parents. The parent feels like everything is their fault. They have done something wrong in raising that child and try in every way to determine where it is that they have went so wrong. Even though I believe that no matter how well you raise a child that child will choose the roads they want to take. The parent also worries about how their child is being treated even though they know they are in the best place they can be to learn their lesson or get the help that they need.
The family members do not understand the operations of a jail system. They will call and want to talk to their loved one not understanding that we do not give messages to the inmate because if that was done it would be with all the inmates and no one would be able to get the work done that is needed to take care of them. Some are very rude and demanding which can be understandable but they also need to realize that we have a job to do and that is to keep their loved on safe.
I believe the not knowing what is going on with their loved ones is a very hard concept. Until I was actually inside the facility and seen how things were ran I did not have any idea. The loved ones are only hearing what the inmates are telling them, not knowing first hand. The biggest majority of officers and staff of a jail are seen as the people who are being mean to their
