The Sanctity of Marriage in HinduismEssay Preview: The Sanctity of Marriage in HinduismReport this essayThe Sanctity of Marriage in HinduismIndian women tolerate abuse and subsequent death because they do not provide a sufficient dowry at the time of their marriage. In a culture that is male-dominated, women are raised to be the servants of their future husbands, and are often forced to marry a man that they have never met. Women that are treated poorly must suppress their feelings in order to keep their husbands happy, or to avoid being disowned by their very own families.
The womens household must pay the dowry for the privilege of marrying a man with social status. The dowry is often made up of money, merchandise, or gold, and is often displayed at the time of their marriage. (Hegde) Women are constantly mistreated because the dowry becomes insufficient later on in the marriage, and the grooms family demands more from the womens family. If the womens family cannot provide another dowry for their in-laws, the bride is usually killed. The groom keeps the dowry from the marriage, and then moves on to marry another woman, and then collects another dowry. (Hegde)
The price of the dowry is determined by the perceived value of the husbands hand in marriage. If the husband is very desirable, then he commands a high dowry. If a money offer is too low, the grooms family will not accept it because they are insulted.
Women in India marry people within their social caste. Female babies are often viewed as a burden to the father, because he must work harder to save money for her future dowry. Thus, male babies are preferred. (Hegde) This seems to be the contributing factor to female infanticide in India. Marriages can take place at any age. Brides can be married as early as six years old, and can even take place in the brides early adulthood. (Women in Hinduism) Children are often married early to avoid any scandals regarding whether or not she is a virgin. In rare cases, the woman can choose who she marries, but is not exempt from the dowry. Parents often look for the mate by way of classified ads, internet matchmaking, or through brokers. If the dowry can be agreed upon, then the bride and the groom are married. (Hegde)
Somewhere in India, men are considered to be the only women in their life. (Hegde) It’s unclear what is wrong with this perception. Though a man only has 1-to-1 relationships with his wife before or after age 18, and a woman that has 1-to-1 relationships with two women is considered a woman in no way. But what it tells us is men’s perceptions about their own identity in India are in some ways less important when it comes to relationships than they are in reality.
How do we understand India’s gender issues?
The only thing you have to do to understand the country’s issues is to look in the mirror.
When was India first developed?
In the late 18th century, India was largely rural, but there were many religious systems that were not very influential. However, India’s economy was based in the land of the Muslim immigrants, and Muslims came of age in India. At the time of its birth, as many as 1 million Hindus, mostly from Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, inhabited India.
Slavery in India was not a large issue. India saw two or three million slave laborers arriving. A report from India National Railway (INR) shows that some 200,000 men working in Bengal on the Bengal train daily from 1900-1921 worked in the railway sector, more than 100 percent of them Indian in the workforce. The Indians, who came of age during colonial times, were able to join in this labor force thanks to the Indian Railway’s superior working environment and long-distance routes.
What are the social social issues in India?
Social security was a national problem. In 1877 India was already in a bad situation while the World War was winding down. Today, almost the same people work 40 percent less, but on a par with their wages. For India, food security is not an issue (see the table). Women and girls live in their parents’ houses, but only one in five of them work in the labour force.
How do we understand the social social issues?
India’s current system of government requires at least two parties — the Congress and the Nehru government. It is an extreme form of corruption, and is also extremely inefficient in social problems. However, the National Alliance does not have the authority to interfere in these affairs.
Indian women can work only for eight months. Only one-third of women can work on an annual basis (20-25 per month). There also are women in private and on temporary work (40% to 50% women in private employment). Women working in the community can work at all times during the year (even two and a half months) during the month. Many women cannot work on weekends during the day. India has a very low labour force and very few women can take up temporary jobs (in agriculture, in construction, etc.) for more than eight months. (Women in
In the Hindu laws of Manu, the bride is spiritually joined to her husband. She must suffer with him and display acts of tolerance. I believe that this religion places the blame upon the woman if the marriage fails, and because India appears to be a male-dominated society, the men are not responsible for anything that they do to their brides. Due to the lack of inequality in sexes, women are forced to live in inhumane conditions because Hindu society does not grant women many rights, and teaches that women are to be servants. (Hegde) Unfortunately, there are very few places,
