Attributions are ideas about why people behave the way they do Pickens, S. (March 08, 2011). We being human, we are always looking for answers to questions about are social environment. There are three different sets of causes; internal/external causes, stable/unstable causes, and controllable/uncontrollable causes.
Internal attributions could be someones intelligence such as a very successful student. Someones attitude either good or bad is an example of an internal attribution as well. External attributions are the things that are caused through things such as lifestyle pressures. This could come from an individuals job or maybe their financial situation. Another example of this could from an individual that played a good sport game, and when asked about it they give the credit to the support that they receive from their fans or family.
Stable and unstable attributions are either permanent or temporary, whether that the individuals state is always going to be the same or if it is something that can have different outcomes. If someone was to grow-up with a parent that drank a lot, then that person could very well have a stable condition of drink as well. An unstable attribution could be an example of an individual being sick with the FLU, so they are under the weather and may not be in the best mood. This is only temporary and is classed as an unstable cause.
Controllable and uncontrollable attributions are whether an individuals behavior is controlled or uncontrolled with situations. An individuals behavior can be considered controlled by something like their mood over a situation. An uncontrolled attribution can be described as a situation where an individual maybe lucky, or happens to find that they have cancer.
Social perception is how we try to make sense of our social surroundings. There are three categories with social perception; developing impressions of others, comparing ourselves with others, and presenting ourselves to others Pickens, S. (March 08, 2011). When we meet an individual for the first time, this is when we create good or bad impression of that person. Such as an interview for a new job or meeting your boyfriends/girlfriend parents for the first time. This process is considered to be the primacy affect because be pay more attention to what we first learn rather than what we will learn from the individual in the time to come Pickens, S. (March 08, 2011). As humans we all compare ourselves to others this is the process of social comparison. We may compare ourselves to others that are not as fortunate as we are as well. By comparing ourselves to other we are able to get to know ourselves, this helps us mold are behavior into the type of person we wish to be. There is also Impression management which is acting in a way that will make us more desirable to others Pickens, S. (March 08, 2011). We will change who we are normally by changing the way we talk or the things that we like in order to get others to like us, this is usually a tactic used for first impressions. Self -monitoring is a paying attention to others in order to be able to make the best impressions with others.
Attitudes are our beliefs or opinion about people, objects and ideas Pickens, S. (March 08, 2011). We have attitudes about everything in our life, such as the types of foods we like or dislike. The types of activities we like to do like running or biking, our favorite sport teams that we like all involve a type of attitude.
