One of the key arguments is that society would be responsible for you if you got hurt. Its already a requirement. Its proven to save lives. The government does it because most people are too dumb to do it otherwise. Infants are flying objects if unrestrained. These laws are enacted for safety reasons. The same reason that you are required to drive on one particular side of the road and not the center or other side. not driving head-on into traffic saves lives. Government has a rightful interest in the health, safety and welfare of its citizens. Infant seats are only different that unlike seat belts they are not installed by the manufacturer of the car. seat belt laws came about in the mid 50s, infant seats werent regulated until the mid 70s. regulations on both have evolved. Children are more restricted under the law than competent adults. For example an adult has the right to refuse medical treatment. The obvious differences from the car seat laws are: It applies to adults, not just children, Cars come with seat belts, so requiring their use does not cost you an extra money. Unlike car seats, which are expensive. Driving is a privilege the government grants you under certain conditions, not a right of citizenship. Those conditions include obeying any law or sign they think up. The infant car seats issue straddles two areas, the drivers privilege that can be revoked and the legal requirements to ensure the safety of minors under your care at all times and places. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) website, here in California alone,” Thousands of children are injured or killed every year by safety seats that are improperly fastened by parents or caretakers .” CHP also stated that it is most common that an accident was likely to happen a mile away from your home. After researching the seat belt laws I conclude that the seat belt laws do save lives.
