Thus, the canal is part of its internal waters and is subjected to its territorial sovereignty. However, huge canals tend to be also considered as international maritime passageway connecting two free seas and their legal regime is ruled by conventional laws which set out in a certain way the principle of freedom of passage to foreign vessels following their regulations. That is the case for the Panama Canal Treaty signed in 1977 (Bureau, 2013) and the Convention of Constantinople of 1888 which rules the Suez Canal (Rohan, 2014).
