Climbing the Ladder to Success
Do you believe you have what it takes to be a leader? UPS is a large company that operates in over 200 countries and is recognized as one of the best companies to work for and climb the ladder to success. Take for instance Jovita Carranza, she began her journey at UPS as a part-time clerk and rose to the top as the vice president of UPS Air Operations. However, Jovita never had a job promotion handed to her for doing nothing. In fact, she took every opportunity and even changed locations over the years. A large company like UPS is always seeking leaders to oversee the operations within all their departments. Even though it took Jovita three decades to become the vice president, she has demonstrated her loyalty, has gained experience, and has characteristics of a successful leader.
Demonstration
UPS is a successful company because they are always recognized for their commitment to their employees. Take for instance Jovita Carranza; she had demonstrated many skills that have contributed to her success at UPS. She started off part-time as a clerk and from there she demonstrated a strong commitment of work ethics in Los Angeles. Within ten years, UPS offered her an opportunity to become the workforce manager. Furthermore, within two years, she was offered another position, but the new position required her to relocate to Texas. The fact that Jovita relocated demonstrated her ability to accept the challenge of change. More importantly, it also provided her with experience to observe other work environments, policies, and diversity. .
As individuals we are all different, yet we may share some similarities. According to Kinicki & Kreitner (2009) “diversity pertains to the host of individual differences that make all of us unique and different from others” (p.97). In addition, Jovita was very observant and listened to other people when they talked. She felt as if she could learn from them as well. Jovita was promoted two more times and relocated to Illinois and Miami. She has moved from one end of the country to another and has learned the demographics of each facility in different locations. All along Jovita has surrounded herself with leaders. She has learned from any mistakes, has been dedicated, and loyal to UPS. Her eagerness to learn and take on new challenges with every opportunity that has been presented to her makes her a strong leader. Each opportunity opened doorways of leaning something new for future endeavors. Jovita interacted with workers in teamwork, staff development, innovation, determination, and kept her focus for achievements.
