Poe and Lovecraft were both wonderful horror writers. Poes style expressed all the gruesome details which allowed the reader to mentally picture everything. Lovecraft left more to the readers imagination which intrigued the reader. I chose to write in my own style. Although, the elements I had used were usually found in Poes work but my intended effect varied with Poes style every now and then. The intended effects were helpful to my plot in a few ways.
There were a few elements of horror writing I chose to use. I used a gruesome death, foreshadowing, curiosity and beauty. I used a gruesome death in my story to describe how she dies to scare or freak out the reader. This element is helpful because gruesome and gory deaths help to mentally picture how the character dies. In addition, the idea of a crazed girl killing another girl for her organs, extracting them and then drinking them in order to obtain beauty is quite disturbing. “There did stand the lofty and enshrouded figure of the lady Madeline of Usher” (100). Poe uses a gruesome death to describe how the character dies in order to scare the reader.
I used foreshadowing to create suspense in my writing. Foreshadowing helped because it implies that something will happen but the reader is unsure of what exactly that may be. Without suspense, the story would be tedious and redundant and the reader would not want to continue reading. In my story, I discussed that Katie had secret desires for Eddie. This is intriguing because some people would do just about anything for love. This makes the reader wonder about how far Katie will go to make Eddie love her. “Presently my soul grew stronger; hesitating no longer…” (378). Poe uses foreshadowing to create suspense in the reader which makes the reader want to continue reading faster and faster so they can discover what happens next.
