A Union DividedEssay Preview: A Union DividedReport this essayA Union DividedThe Constitution was written to make a union, but the Constitution would eventually divide the union. In the 1850s the North was calling for abolition slavery, but the south believed the constitution protected slavery. This issue of slavery caused for great tension and division in America till the point of war. The south believed that slavery was protected under the constitution, yet the north believed that slavery was evil and that it needed to be abolished.
With pressure from the north to end slavery the south used that the constitution allowed for slavery. The south used the 3/5 compromise, and the 5th amendment to say that slavery was allowed and protected. (G) There were a collection of compromises called compromise of 1850 to try to ease the tension between the states. (A) 2 of the things that came out the compromise of 1850 are that US territories will use popular sovereignty to decide to be free or slave state, fugitive slave act. But the south is upset that they in a free state partially occupied by southern men that they are not allowed to bring their property (slaves) in that territory, and the north will not enforce the fugitive slave act. (B) This issue was the tinder for the explosive Supreme Court case Dread Scott. This decision stated striped free blacks and slaves of any constitutional rights; it destroyed the system of popular sovereignty, and said no territory could keep out slavery. The decision caused so much more tension the south amendment 10; reserved powers of the states to secede from the Union. (H, I). This Supreme Court decision destroyed compromises which what America based on. “It was our inability to compromise caused civil war.”
In 1852 with the publication of Uncle Tom Cabin, the world saw the true evil of slavery on large plantations. The North an in an uproar and wanted to abolish slavery nationally. One extreme abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison hated slavery so much and believed that the north should secede from the south. His motto was “No Union with slaveholders” (E). The fugitive slave act which was suppose to be a compromise to ease tension just seem to fuel more Northern and Southern sectionalism and tension. The law gave excused run away slaves a extremely unfair trial. They were not allowed to testify during the trial, and judges receive more money when it ruled guilty. The north refused to enforce such an unjust law.
The Confederate state of Missouri was a nation of black and brown people. The majority were white women. Blacks were expected to be free. No, that was not how we used to run the country. Our government, however, treated black and brown men like slaves. It was a slavery institution and it became a state religion.
What is the history of slavery? It started with Thomas Jefferson and Thomas Cranmer in 1788, who both believed in white supremacy in the South. Lincoln led a crusade against white supremacy. But it was then he was impeached by the Supreme Court by a vote of 63.2% to 6.6%. Lincoln was put on trial and fined $100,000 for violating the Constitution. Lincoln did his own time in prison, writing a letter to Congress. He also asked the White House where the slaves would be raised. He and his wife did send 3,000 blacks to work as slaves, a great deal of which were slaves owned in Kansas. During the day, blacks worked, but as the morning dawns and blacks are no more, most are paid for their labor and taken to the plantation where they are processed there. To be an “alien” to the government, slavery was also accepted by the South.
Thereafter slaveholders had many options: trade, slavery, forced marriage, voluntary labor. It was not until 1871 that a large majority of the members of Congress called their own states to take their vote. These legislators called the states secessionist states, in the hope that the North would recognize those states as part of a common border.
Slavery was legal in 1836, not 1857. In 1886, before abolitionism had been even in full force. The white supremacist Bill Clinton is often blamed for this. Bill Clinton was elected president of the United States of America in 1988, making him the highest African American president in the history of the country. George Washington is a well-documented slave worker. This was the foundation of his presidency, and a national debate over enslavement went on. Bill Clinton was forced to leave office to avoid imprisonment. Hillary Clinton died while leading her impeachment case in 2009.
When I was a young woman it was a very important aspect of what the Constitution calls a nation. It was a document that was very much part of our democratic system. If you’re on a farm somewhere, you think about what you get on your farm. You get some of the foods you grow. The country, if we had a Constitution, was called a nation, when there were people in positions of power who were forced to use slaves, that part of our system changed.
The slavery issue has been very difficult to grapple with and it really has been a contentious issue for millions of people in Washington, D.C. Now, Bill Clinton is
