According to many the Civil war was fought in order to end slavery in the United States, so accordingly, to those the flag represents a past of slavery that they would much rather forget. In opposition to those who feel this way about the Confederate flag, others see it as just a symbol of their Southern heritage whether they are ancestors of slaves, slave owners or sharecroppers; their heritage is the Confederate South. The Confederate Flag should be outlawed and not used as a symbol to represent a state because it has a modern association with white supremacist, presents no positive contribution to those of this country, and those who flaunt the flag have an attitude which is “backward-looking, rejecting the diversity and dynamism of this country.”(ABC News.com)
The confederate flag should be outlawed because it has a modern association with white supremacist. White supremacist, are not an unorganized throng of individuals rather they are a political group known for being hateful to all those who are different from them, be it by race, religion, or even thought pattern. This group of individuals also feels that they are better than others just because of their skin color. White supremacist have a very narrow minded view on life in general and any symbol that represents them often offends others. The country, which we live in, is based on equality and a symbol of a group that does not believe in equality should not be used as a sign to identify a state. The Confederate flag in essence represents a political party whose overall priority is “to totally subjugate and dehumanize those different from their selves.”(Newsweek)
Furthermore, the confederate flag presents no positive contribution to those living in this country. Those who fly the confederate flag are often regarded as showing support for racist principles and a hurtful past. Surely all those who fly the flag are not racist or intentionally have a desire to hurt those who they fortuitously offend, but in many cases they are perceived this way. The representation that those who fly the flag take on often does more to cause a problem than it does to unite those of this country. This country is built on the principle that all men are created equal and flying the confederate flag takes away from this principle by reminding many of a past which they would rather forget. A Confederate flag is designed to symbolize our common American history, and is often a symbol of our struggle to establish and maintain segregation. That was the intent of Senator Al-Saleh, Chairman of the Tennessee General Assembly in 1861. He used to call a Confederate flag that was already considered offensive, such as one from the Confederate States of America. He wanted that flag adopted as the emblem of slavery as a new flag to symbolize the black South. The reason for the adoption was that, as noted above, both the colored and black South had different customs and cultures, and had differing opinions. It is important to understand that the state of South Carolina established a federal flag in the late 1800s, which it never intended to become a national flag because it would not be racist to not recognize the state’s flag to be national in the case of statehood. At the time, statehood was the foundation of an anti-federalist movement. We are not racists or anti-fascists. I mean the very idea of American pride, liberty and a national flag would also be racist and offensive if our country’s flag was not recognized to be the official U.S. flag as well. I think we owe a great deal to George Wallace who made that mistake in using the flag in his acceptance speech at the 1924 Democratic National Convention. At the convention, Wallace asked everyone to sign for president, “Who will vote for who?” In a famous speech of 1924, Wallace claimed that “this republic is still the United States of America.” The flag belongs to the United States of America, and because it is legal in all four states, it is on our national flag. The white population’s preference for the white flag is based on how it was taken from us during the Civil War, and what our country had to become as a nation before it became a country. Therefore, since the flag is a flag of this country, it represents a struggle for that nation to become its own. The Confederate flag represents America and the freedom of individuals. That’s how we have our freedom to be self-defending. I understand a lot of those who are saying, “I’m offended by the flag being on the U.S. flag.” That actually is not the case either. The flag is a symbol of liberty and the way that we live our lives. That’s how we have our freedom to be free and self-reliant from slavery. There is nothing intrinsically wrong with that design. However, I believe that the current national flag should be used for all to recognize that the national flag is an idea founded on equality, freedom, and equality. That the people of the South are being discriminated against based upon the color of their skin. It must be a symbol that shows an effort for America to achieve an equal and loving relationship between the people of each of its states. In that way, we have our freedom to act as our own sovereign citizens and to participate in the development of American history. That way, we can realize the progress of America’s economy and a better world without discrimination, greed, hatred, or prejudice from within and without. That way we also have the capacity to shape the future of this country into a different world we want to live in. It’s time to take the flag away from slavery, and we need to take it back to the man who made us.
All Americans should have the freedom to carry a copy of their flag and to keep it for themselves. The president did not use the flag to take a stand against slavery. All Americans should have the right to express themselves freely
