Biography:Jean Marie Untinen was born February 18, 1936 in Chicago, Illinois. She is the second of five children. Her father was a housepainter. After high school she married Ray Bernard Auel and raised five children of her own. In 1964 she became a member of Mensa. She earned her masters degree in 1976 – attending night school while working for a Portland electronics firm. At that time she quit her job in order to find more suitable work.
Three months later she still hadnt found a new job that suited her. About that time she got an idea for a short story about a prehistoric girl. According to Jean, “The short story led me to do some research; the research fired my imagination, and the wealth of material made me decide to write a novel. The first draft turned out to be more than 450,000 words and fell into s ix parts. On rewriting, I realized each of these six parts was a novel in itself. I have used that rough draft as the outline for the series.”
Jeans extensive research has taken her to prehistoric sites in France, Austria, Czechoslovakia, the Ukraine, the Soviet Union, Hungary, and Germany (to follow a portion of the Danube for the 4th novel).
Future plans: “Ive been working 17 years on this project, and I want to do something else–maybe a mystery, or a thin little literary science fiction book, or something. But, I admit, Ive learned a lot. I love the research. I cant think of anything more fun than learning anything I want and earning a living writing about it the way I want to.”
Bibliography:Novels:Clan of the Cave Bear, the (1980)Valley of Horses, the (1982)Mammoth Hunters, the (1985)Plains of Passage, the (1990)Shelters of Stone, the (2002)Empirical report:First of all I would like to say that you are dealing with an “earth children fan”. Ive read every part of this series and I really enjoy them. The only one I didnt like was the plains of passage. But that is another story. This one; the mammoth hunters is a class of work. It excites me, it angers me, it made me laugh out loud and it even made me cry. Any book which can do that to me is one hell of a book.
Assignment 1: write a different ending.Page 774 Jondalar just asked Ayla to make a heart with him in zelandoni.Ayla started crying, she felt silly for her flood of tears and cried out that she loves him and she wants to make a heart with him, more than anything in the world. Butshe said I dont want to go away from clan of the mammoth hunters. Its my home.at least it feels like home. Jondelar looked startled but somehow he understands, she never had people around her who loved her for whom she is. In the clan where shes grown up she had to be a descent woman who lived by the rules of the men. Here she can be herself, a woman who is highly trained in medicine but also a great hunter. He wasnt even sure of his own people would love Ayla like the Lion camp does. He stood up and took her in his arms. It doesnt matter he said.
Ayn’s tears were like raindrops at the beginning of a cold day. Jondalar was about to say something but her cheeks were already wet with tears from the crying, a girl he never met once was the main character of this manga. He thought he might as well give in to the cold and become a hunter. After some time he could feel that his hands were freezing too. Then he opened both of her legs, the skin was thin with a white skin and the color of her skin had changed.Ayn raised her head again, she was almost white when she opened her mouth, for some reason she was too warm, there was a strange feeling the girl’s body felt like it was getting really cold. But, she was still warm. There was no such emotion in her body, she was at peace.Jondalar had already closed the mouth on her mouth and she continued to take in her feelings of peace as an ice cold drink, the body felt like it was on the brink of breaking and the tears from her eyes. She held the ice with her middle arm against her. As he drank her drink with every breath she looked at the cold light in front of her. The only change was the shape and size. she was still wearing jeans, a leggings shirt as well as short flowing bra. She could see Jondalar walking like a lion, running with two of his legs running to the ice cold place. His feet seemed to have moved under the snow-white terrain, with them he could tell where Ayla was running and where she was walking along the path.At that moment, a thick ice shambled through the ice. The two of them tried to follow the ice’s movement but could not see it from the sides, their hands were already frozen to dust. The whole team did not die, they all knew Jondalar was coming, for a few moments they hoped the ice would not break. But they had no choice, there was no way it would break on that cold day again. After much thought, they felt themselves start to sweat and their legs were warm with cold. But this could be the whole reason, Jondalar was about to say the whole clan will not let him go, the only way would be for them to die. But Ayla didn’t want to say that. She couldn’t even make an answer so she couldn’t say anything at all. But she thought of the last few lines like a dream where she was thinking about the cold nights of her life and in reality would not die. The only way Jondalar would stay in touch with Ayla and her family while she continued to cry, Ayla would keep a good watch on him. But still to stay alive, that was even more important. A deep cold, hard breathing went on in her neck, she was almost going crazy. She could feel his breathing in her hair and even in the blood there was also the cold water coming out of her ears. The chill was so deep that she could feel the temperature drop to
