“The Glass Castle” by Jeannette Walla is about a family of six that moved from place to place in poverty. Jeannette tells about the struggles she and her family went through to get where they are today. This family of six lived in many states and went through harsh states to survive. Her mother and father never kept a steady job, but they had great intelligence. Jeannette and her brother and sisters barely went to school to get the proper education they needed. The mother, Rosemary Walls, stuck to her dreams to become another Picasso or Van Gogh. She stayed at home, painted, and did nothing else. The father, Rex Walls, was a very intelligent man who knew a lot of things that could have gave him a steady job and provided for his family, instead of drinking and smoking his life away. These kids of Rose Mary and Rex Walls, Jeanette, Brian, Lori, and Maureen stood beside their parents until they were old enough to fend for themselves.
Conflicts were always popping up in this book. The main conflict that kept appearing in the novel is money. Money was always short during the early years of the Walls family. Due to this conflict every family member was affected because it led to no food, late bill payment, led them to wear thrift clothes that they passed down to each other. Her family got through this conflict by money that one of them got by luck, but Jeannette, Lori, Brian, and Maureen over came their money problems when they moved to New York and left their parents behind. Another conflict is when Jeannette would get into fights with other kids that didnt like what she wore or because she was poor. Brian would always help her by scaring them whenever they approached Jeannette. These books have many conflicts and if I was to write about them all I would never end.
