Why I Chose Accounting as My Carreer
As a young adult entering college, I was not really sure what I wanted to study. I knew that it would be something in the business world but I had no idea what it would be specifically. After many hours of research, I have decided to pursue a degree in accounting. A degree in accounting will give me the education to succeed at just about anything in the business world. Accounting opens doors in every kind of business coast to coast. It provides a foundation I need to build upon to become a CPA. It can prepare me to become a partner in an accounting firm, to pursue a career in finance or corporate management, to work in government, or even to become an entrepreneur and open up my own business, which I’ve been thinking about for a long time. The reason accounting may be the best route to a successful business career is because accounting has always been considered as the language and basic tool of business. It has always concerned itself with determining how a business is doing and what the bottom line is. In this increasingly complex and competitive business, the demand for accountants appears to be growing and outstripping supply. Job opportunities in today’s business climate are better than ever for accountants.
Research
When I started seriously considering my future, I was pretty certain that I wanted to work in a field that has something to do with numbers. I could never just sit down and start typing a paper or solve science problems. I simply don’t have the creativity to write long papers, or research information that is uninteresting to me. I knew that accounting was a high-paying profession, and providing myself with the assets to be financially stable is the main reason why I go to college. I began more in-depth research about the major and career when I was ending my sophomore year. I started looking up the job market in the area, what kind of jobs I could start with, and what the requirements are for each position.
Job market
Getting a job right out of college can seem impossible in a land of post-college unpaid internships. Fortunately accounting is one of the few majors where grads still get to choose from plenty of opportunities. With strong analytical skills and highly coveted tax expertise, accounting grads can do anything from working for a Big Four firm to working as a personal financial planner or at a nonprofit organization. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 15.7 percent growth for accountants between 2010 and 2020, which is much faster than the average growth for most other professions. An additional 190,700 accounting and auditing jobs will need to be filled during that time period. The profession’s promising outlook has earned it the No. 21 spot on the Best Jobs of 2012 list.
