The Bravest Of Individuals Is One Who Obeys His Or Her Conscience,”Essay Preview: The Bravest Of Individuals Is One Who Obeys His Or Her Conscience,”Report this essay“The bravest of individuals is one who obeys his or her conscience,” was once stated by J.F Clarke, when this quote is broken down one may notice the amount of truth behind it. J.F Clarkes interpretation of braveness and conclusion on the topic of obeying their conscience is rather intelligent due to the belief of inner senses of what is right or wrong will lead to the right choices in life. Two examples of literature that strongly support this quote can be found in “Of Mice And Men” by John Steinbeck, as well as “The Crucible” by Arthur Miller. The use of literary elements, such as rising action, dramatic irony, mood and foreshadowing.
In Arthur Millers, “The Crucible,” John Proctor is faced with a life or death situation. Even though John Proctor virtually has the choice of which path to follow, life or death, there are many other variables that ultimately lead him to his choice. Johns decision is ultimately swayed by the sheer conception of dieing with pride or dieing confessing to something he simply did not do. The conscience of John Proctor comes into play while he is ultimately deciding his faith, shall he live his life in exile like no man should, or die with honor and obey his inner senses to protect his family and his last name. This makes John brave because of the ultimate sacrifice given up by an honest man to obey his inner senses. The use of literary elements in “The Crucible,” all lead to the climax and turning point of the story, which is when John is hung. Arthur Millers use of rising action creates a surplus of tension and animosity between each of the towns people in fear of they in time will be blamed of witchcraft, just as many others have already, helps lead up to the climax of the story which is when John is faced with the proposition of life and death. Arthur Millers use of dramatic irony also increases the plots realness and tension, the readers know that Abigail is attempting to get her way out of a situation by blaming others for wrong doing to turn the attention from her, but the characters in the book do not.
From John Steinbecks “Of Mice And Men” an excellent example of characters being brave by obeying their conscience. In this work of literature, George Miltons faced with a situation of what is right and wrong and which inner sense to listen to. Georges long time friend and mentally handicapped friend Lennie Smalls has just killed Curleys wife, inside of a barnyard accidentally. Lennie attempts to run away from the whole situation, but George knows exactly where he will be, and that is at the exact spot he told him to go to if there was trouble. As George arrives at the river Lennie was instructed to go to, George realizes he has a great problem, should he kill his long time best friend and save him from the swarming angry
George. George is a self-made and passionate man, and his efforts to escape from tragedy are both heroic. He has a great deal of difficulty with his parents and is often unable to make a decent life without them, but they take care of him, and during each day of his life he keeps his hand on his heart. He was a boy who always kept to himself about matters of love and family, and at times he made little effort to take care of himself, although his ability as a young man was greatly weakened. I have had more success here than you and so many other writers have had. But my story has so little hope for it, I don’t believe in you. The people will get out, I will die, but they will never get out! It is my fate to have your courage. -George M.M.O
I hope this, not you, will save you from death, that the only thing that will keep you alive you may have. In order to have courage as an adult, I have tried to be as kind-hearted as possible and never been able to be that kindhearted towards anyone. When I first became a writer, I tried to write as good an account of my life as I was able to give, and I knew that people were going to want to read that kind of story, but unfortunately I couldn’t. However, I had a beautiful dream that something very great and special happened to the boy, and so I needed to share that and have you look at it carefully. -George M.M.O
I think as a writer, people will want to read it. But I know that they will give me no satisfaction at all. I have tried to give in with almost nothing, and in the dream I am only trying to make myself look good – and I was able to do pretty well in this, though I am sure that it didn’t happen right after what turned out in the dream.
I could not think of anything different, and I knew that this is where it is going. I was always saying the same things at the night when I had no idea what I was saying.
I believe that I can do much in this story if I only have to. -George M.M.O
I hope that it will not happen to you…I could never have imagined I thought that I could have lived like this. -George M.M.O
I am really thankful that I have gotten this chance, thank you for bringing
