Many well known diseases have caused a massive amount of deaths tolls around the world. This was due to the many diseases that did not have treatable vaccines available to help cure the disease. During the mid 1900s, not many vaccinations were around to help reduce the amount of people infected with a deadly disease. The invention of the polio vaccine by Jonas Salk helped society by saving many lives.
Jonas Salk and Dr. Thomas Francis began many procedures to begin researching different vaccinations to help prevent a variety of illnesses, for example the influenza vaccine. According to the book Jonas Salk Discoverer of the Polio Vaccine by Carmen Bredeson, it is stated that in 1938, the NFIP, later known as the March of Dimes, was organized by the President of the United States Franklin D. Roosevelt. The foundation donated money to Jonas Salk and Dr. Francis, which helped them get started on their research and studies on the polio outbreak. As President Roosevelt was one of the many people diagnosed with the polio disease, he wanted to participate in the search of finding a cure for this disease. With this being known to the two scientists, Salk and Francis began their work on the polio vaccine.
