Why Jordan Shoes are famous?
That man was Michael Jordan, the hall of famer for the Chicago Bulls who received multiple MVP awards and had won 6 NBA championships. He had all the tools needed to attract an audience. The 6’6” guard from North Carolina entered the NBA in 1984 and played his last game in 2003. It has been 11 years since he has last played and many NBA stars have risen since that time, but still, to this day, none of them carry the brand recognition across the globe like Air Jordan. When Michael Jordan entered the NBA with all the hype and followings, Nike decided to make the move of signing him on with an endorsement deal. The up and coming sneaker company wanted to make sure that as MJ rose to stardom that their shoes were right there with him. The most important thing to making sure the world recognizes your brand is to have a memorable name and logo. Nike had the brilliant idea of capturing everything about Jordan in one logo. It was a picture of Michael Jordan hanging in the air, basketball in hand with his legs spread wide. There was nothing else in the logo, no background or basketball hoop as a point of reference which gives off the illusion that he could just stay up there forever. It only made sense to name it Air Jordan and it was from this point on where Nike knew what direction to take this brand.
As Jordan continued to dominate in the league and gain a bigger and bigger fan. Anyone who bought a pair of Jordan’s felt privileged to wear the same shoes that the basketball superstar wears. I can remember walking around school and some of the “cool” kids were wearing Air Jordan’s. Everyone would gather around saying “Oh man, you got them new J’s.” The jump man logo became very recognizable, everyone who had it flaunted it and those who didn’t have a pair wanted one. The shoes became synonymous with being cool. Who would have thought some leather and glue sewn together with a symbol of a Jump Man demanded somebody be cooler than the next kid.
Michael Jordan uses appeal to authority very well by being called the Greatest Ever. Even on his shoeboxes it states, “Premium crafted performance inspired by the Greatest Ever.” Then on some of his shoes it’s labeled with “Quality inspired by the Greatest Player Ever.” Jordan Brand uses this to indicate he is an authority in basketball and his products should be considered when making purchases. Jordan makes the buyer feel good about buying his clothing and shoes by having the person feel like they are joining an elite club. This sense of belonging has had a profound effect on the general public to buying Michael Jordan products. Some individuals walking into their local sports store and see the Jordan Brand logo and are compelled to buy the item.
The popularity of Michael Jordan and the Air Jordan brand of shoes and clothing became so big that Nike decided to have
