Dear mr. Salas the book I chose was how the garcia sisters lost their accents
How the García sisters lost their accent by Julia Alvarez In this novel the García girls Carla, Sandra, Yolanda, Sofìa and their families have to flee the Dominican Republic after their father’s role in attempt to overthrow a tyrannical dictator is discovered. Sofìa disobeys her father by loosing her virginity, running off with her secret German lover and conceiving a child after her father found Letters that her secret lover sent her. Sofìa’s father got mad and and told her she dishonored the family name and she packed her things and went to Germany. Sofìa has always been a disobedient since she was a child. She was the youngest of 4 girls and her mother dressed them in the same clothes but different colors. She always cried about how she wanted to wear pink like the 3rd born and her mother always had to remind her of how good of a color white was because that’s the color she wore. I think explaining sofìa‘s childhood and explaining her behavior as a child helps understand why she doesn’t follow her fathers rules because she didn’t spend much time with her father when she was little
I noticed that the author of How the García sisters lost their accent uses a lot of scenery but she doesn’t explain the areas that the characters are in, in detail so it is kind of hard to picture the guava trees on page 17 when she says “on either side of the road are guava trees” it doesn’t really explain the scenery I would have put
“as we turned the corner of the worn winding road we saw hundreds of beautiful green guava trees. The dark green of the leaves and the light green of the guavas gave the look of a painting in a story book.” The questions I have about the author and the book are what made Julia Alvarez want to write this book? How does this book relate to her life? And why did she choose for the characters
