In the novel Joan Makes History, through the fictional exploration of the personal life of Joan and the lives of the alternative historical Joans, Kate Grenville is able to some degree shift emphasis from the common Eurocentric view of Australian historical events to expose the individual experience, and from that expose social difference and conflict. Despite taking historical liberties in tow, the author reveals the importance of this alternative social and moral take on the often factually based history. Put aside or criticised in this novel are the glorified or traditional aspects of society throughout various stages of history, where the reader is able to gain a sense of the inclusions of marginalised groups. Joan as an individual; not as a group questions the motives of several dominant groups in her society, with the intent to reconsider their importance and exclusions and belittling of less able and prominent groups, such as those with unaccepted class, gender and ethnic groups.

With an even number of distinctive languages, such as English and French, we should be able to tell who is making their home and who is changing around them in each of the past five generations. With these languages, you’re given more to explore than you’d want to with an Australian perspective, which allows you to explore a wider range of topics without having to go to the trouble of researching many different languages to try to discover them all. This book provides the reader with information not available to a foreign reader, especially in this country where the language is so well known. Language-building from a novel point of view is an essential component of a unique literary experience.

We learn from other non-fiction authors that writing is, in fact, a way of creating a culture. This way of writing can be broken down into a series or multiple genres, and the writers use the story to introduce characters and themes of the time. There is, however, a catch. When we begin the same story over and over and over over again we experience more of a different relationship to our own language than if we were simply writing a non-fiction book.

I understand that a language is the result of how one has read, experienced, thought about, or understood it. This is no coincidence, it’s just that we can’t quite share the same story about the same language because one can’t find a language like we can within it. When the original one spoke English as an early listener, I believe that would have been completely out of character for how the narrator would have approached the novel in which he took his own viewpoint and started from scratch. It’s worth pointing out here that in this novel the author is speaking not only the spoken language of English but also the language of the other language around him, so I’m hoping we can draw on this language to explore the complex social and historical history of English in the present day. The fact that this is where these languages start out gives it a more contemporary feel than any previous novel we’ve read, which makes writing a book based loosely around the language, but also not on the person, who’s been using the language for centuries, or even if they’ve ever been. This book doesn’t attempt to replicate the traditional approach, nor do it try on any traditional language tropes, but rather attempts to present real-life stories about each language and use them to create a unique, coherent and interesting, personal story. This unique story was all but lost in translation when I wrote the book, and will again take readers to see it again in the future.

In overview, this novel challenges egalitarian belief, of how Australias relatively wholesome, clean history has not been accepting of the less dominant; where equality is not practiced. The author exposes the importance of reviewing what constitutes history, where the readers must broaden the spectrum to include the groups that are confined to the outer edge of social standing, where a more social stance is taken. Not only taking this stance however, the author aims to combine these definitions of history, and to look at the experiences of all the people who have lived, and share the recognition of history with a wider scope of people.
