Collins has written a compulsively readable blend of science fiction, survival story, unlikely romance, and social commentary.”
–Horn Book, STARRED REVIEW”Themes of government control, “big brother,” and personal independence are explored amidst a thrilling adventure that will appeal to science fiction, survival, and adventure readers. The suspense of this powerful novel will keep the reader glued to the page long after bedtime.”–VOYA, Deborah L. DuboisPOINT OF VIEWThe novel is written in the voice of 16-year old Katniss Everdeen, who lives in a dystopian, post-apocalyptic nation of Panem in North America.SUMMARY OF PLOTExposition:In the District 12 called the Seams, Katniss Everdeen lives along with her sister Primrose and her mother in a house at the edge of the poor town. Her father, which is a former miner died in an explosion which devastated her mother, who then became unable to take care of her and her sister. Katniss was force to act as the head of her family and hunt for games and wild animals, using her skills in using bow and arrows, along with her bestfriend, Gale. Although the poorest of the 12 Districts, the Seams also have a few residents who are rich enough, like Peeta Mellark, whose family runs a bakery and has helped Katniss once and has loved her since, then Haymitch who lives in the Luxurious Victor’s Village as the only living Victor of District 12. [4]Conflict:As a result of the past rebellion, the annual Hunger Games was born, wherein all the districts shall offer up one male and female tribute in the reaping day, to fight to the death in the arena. During the reaping day at district 12, everyone with ages 12 to 18 was anxiously gathered in the town square, guarded by the Peacekeepers, while their names are put inside the bowl, depending on the tesserae or extra food they purchase in exchange for more chances of being chosen. When Effie Trinket finally announced Primrose as the female tribute, Katniss immediately volunteered in her place, while Peeta Mellark is the chosen male tribute. After saying goodbye the two tributes along with Effie and Haymitch rode in a fancy train to the Capitol where they will be presented and trained for the upcoming 74th Hunger Games.[4]Climax: After polishing, presenting, and training the tributes in the Capitol, they were transported in the arena designed by the Head Gamemaker Seneca. The brutal fights and deaths soon follow headed by the Careers and several lethal mutations like tracker jackers, and mutts. In the arena, Rue became Katniss’s close ally and heartbreak after being killed by one of the Careers, that always tails and has attempted to kill her several times. But after Seneca announced that two victors will be allowed, Katniss finds Peeta severely hurt and in need of supplies that can only be given by sponsors from the Capitols. [4]
