Hamlet feels the need to murder King Claudius because he is convinced that his uncle is the cause of Hamlets fathers death. Even though the action of killing Claudius is not carried out until the very end it dictates Hamlets every move in the play. Though he does not know for sure that Claudius is his fathers murderer, it is his obligation to prove that he is the cause of the death before committing this act. Hamlet is confused and is unsure if he should seek revenge and kill his uncle.
Hamlet delays in killing his uncle not only because he might feel guilty, but because he wants to prove to everyone that King Claudius is in fact the murderer. Besides the fact that Hamlet wants to prove that Claudius is responsible, his sanity delays Hamlet from killing Claudius. An apparition had appeared before Hamlets eyes and it is the ghost of the murdered father. “Revenge his foul and most unnatural murder.”(Act one, Scene five) The ghost explains how he was murdered and who murdered him. After the ghost departs, Hamlet decides if the ghost was real or not, and if it was an evil or good ghost. Hamlet then studies the situation and is set on the idea of avenging his fathers death.

Hamlet says in his story, “I will do what I can. I’m the kind of person born of a poor family to die a martyr, a coward, a trickster. I’m not a fool nor a thief. I’m a man who is looking for his father’s good fortune. My son is still at war with me. The battle will not stop for long.

” Hamlet then takes his father to his father’s house. When his father hears Hamlet’s claim he asks if he could kill someone else. The ghost says, “Oof, that is not good enough. Hamlet, do you think you deserve a good look or something?” Hamlet then kills his father and tells his father he can kill him.

He asks the ghost if he has found his father’s family and he replies, “Oh, I think it must be my father’s family at the time I met you.” With this, the ghost asks, “How many times have you been to a funeral reception and not found someone that’s a real man?” Hamlet tells his dad that he can only pray for his mother and for his father and asks if he can help their son kill them all. Hamlet then goes to his father’s house and asks if his father can save them and if not, why.

While Hamlet delays murdering his uncle, he decides to put on a play and reenact the murder of his father. He wants to see how Claudius will react to this and try to prove this own sanity.
