Kinos discovery of the great pearl greatly affected their lives, especially their baby, Coyotito. People were going after them because of the pearl, most of their fellow villagers thought that they were going to live a rich life and Kino would be carrying a rifle which is not common to them. The pearl greatly affected their safety and the villagers treatment to them; it even caused the loss of their son Coyotito.
I believe that of all the townsfolk fishermen, the large oyster left itself partly open for Kino not because it is his lucky day but his fate decided that it was time for Kino to experience these hardships and be an example to his family.
The author created a lot of characters which show the attitudes of people these days, and he wants these characters to create the mistakes that are commonly committed by these kinds of people. Kino was a hard working father, who provides safety and basic needs to his family. His wife, Juana, is the typical mother who takes care of her child and gives her family their basic needs. Coyotito, their child, is a baby who sees the protection of his parents. Juan Tomas, Kinos brother, and his wife Apoliona also provide his brothers family safety and protection they need against evil elements. The doctor did not respond to Kinos call for he knew that Kino has no money and would not be able to pay him for his services.
It was coincidental that the great pearl was discovered the same year they had Coyotito, they thought that it would bring fortune to their family but it did not. Their fate was changed when they had discovered the great pearl for they thought about their future from afar and decided to take the shortcut to their destiny. Kinos refusal to sell the pearl brought danger to his family for it attracted evil to his family especially to Coyotito.
