Sexulaity and sexual behavior is something that every human being has to encounter in their everyday lives. In the Kung culture sexuality/ controls on sexual behavior differ greatly from the American culture. The book “Nisa” describes the life of a women named Nisa that lives in the African Kung society. Nisa describes some of her sexual experiences as a child as well as her marriages. Reading this novel made me realize that not all people view sexual behavior the same way.
In the Kung society children dont attend school. Children have to rely on their observation skills and learn from their surroundings. They dont have a sex ed class to teach them about their sexuality and how they are supposed to behave. In the Kung society boys and girls play together and are allowed to play to rough with each other. In the Kung society boys and girls are looked at equally. Neither is gender is taught to be submissive.
In the Kung society theres basically no competition. Children are not taught to defeat someone or try to be better than their fellow peers. The games that they play growing up are not based on competition but more about learning about life. The children are taught not to quit so that they could feel a sense accomplishement. In addition, grown ups are also the same way. They dont try to outshine or compete with their peers.
Children in the Kung culture learn about sex relatively quickly. They learn fast because they are so sexually free and they are always playing games together. The children pick up the male and female roles quickly. Nisa states in the book that boys are the first to learn about the “sweetness” of the sexual games. Although males are the first to learn that doesnt mean that the girls are clueless. Some girls do holdback and start playing the sexual games later in life. The Kung society tends to be more of a sexually permissive society. They allow children to learn about sex freely. In the Kung society children sleep in the same hut as their parents. They sleep in the same hut so that the children could learn what their parents are doing under the blankets and have an understanding of their sexual activity.
The Kung society doesnt really have a real value on virginity. Both genders are allowed to freely express themselves sexually from a young age. They basically experiment and do what their bodies naturally want. Because they are treated the same way girls and boys are allowed to expose body parts. The Kung culture is one that is free and learn through observation and experimentation.
In a Kung marriage both men and women have the same authority. They are both allowed to sexually and emotionally express themselves. In the Kung culture the first marriage is usually set up by their parents. The first years are normally difficult because they are forced to sleep
