Lab Grown Meat’s Economic and Moral Impact
Lab Grown Meat’s Economic and Moral Impact
The goal of the scientists at Maastricht University in Netherlands, is to decrease the amount of slaughtered animals and invent a meat that is made from the tissue of an animal without harming the animal. The amount of consumption of meat in the world is getting larger by the year, therefore the scientists came up with a meat made in a petri dish and are trying to sell it for almost the same price as regular meat. However, I do not think this new meat idea will be successful because it is still too costly and also there are still animals that are being slaughtered in order to make this special meat. At first, one meat patty cost about $273,000, which has now dropped down significantly but not enough. Now about one burger patty costs around $9, and in pounds about $30 per pound of meat. The price for one pound of meat is still way too expensive. The average price of one pound of regular beef is $5. The difference of the prices is still very large, which will result in not many people buying the lab grown meat. Also, one of the goals of the scientists was to not slaughter animals, that is why they invented the special eat. But, animals are still being slaughtered because when the meat is being grown, it is placed in a serum which is made out of cow foetuses’ blood2. The goal is not being reached, the making of the meat still involves slaughtering animals. In my opinion, this new meat idea will not be very successful.
