In relation to earlier decades, modern day trust in the workplace has diminished significantly. This decline in the workplace has lead to higher turnover, lower production, and declining profits. Often, in a distrusting work environment, employees will ‘work for a check’ and adopt a WIFM (what’s in it for me) attitude. There will be a lack of pride in production, lack of respect for leadership, and lack of caring for the overall longevity of the organization.
Research has noted four elements of trust which when incorporated together can lead to building and repairing trust in relationships, both personal and professional. Described as the ABCD trust model, each element can be independent or used together in the building or repair process.
A (Able) pertains to competence and ‘getting the job done’. Do you have and can demonstrate the competence in completing the task well?
B (Believable) pertains to integrity and consistency. By utilizing an honest, fair, and equal approach in processes and procedure enforcement the workgroup will be more open to rely and trust their leaders.
C (Connected) pertains to the demonstration of being concerned and caring for the workgroup. By showing care and concern for the workgroup relating to their professional performance and personal relations, in addition to being more open about your own professional and personal relations, a leader can create a connection with the workgroup.
D (Dependable) pertains to being responsive to others and completing commitments timely while keeping promises. Responding to the workgroup needs and offering
