In this scenario, the executive is a “level 5” leader. His concentration is on the overall success of the company and he is less interested in any personal credit or acknowledgement for his efforts. The five main elements that he leads with are: he is working with a team, he is individually capable, hes a proficient and capable manager, he can encourage others to work and perform as best as they can and he is not an egomaniac.
As a result of the companys, the media tries to publicly acknowledge his achievements and Executive A humbly and modestly shares the triumphs with his coworkers and the other leaders in the company. He does not need or want to be recognized by the public. By the same token, he accepts responsibility for any mistakes as far as the company is concerned.
There are to candidates who are being considered to take the executives position when he retires. For this scenario, we will refer to them as Leader B and Leader C.
Leader B is a “transactional” leader. Leader B seems to be more of a disciplinarian in nature. He gives his subordinates certain goals and if those goals are met then they are rewarded. However, if they fail, they are punished. Once a goal or task is delegated, it becomes the full responsibility of the subordinate. The triumph and victory is fully theirs, as well as the failure if they do not succeed. Leader B expects his workers to work proficiently and expeditiously. In other words, he just wants them to get the job done, period.
Leader C is a “transformational” leader. The different between transformational and transactional leaders is that while transformational leaders still adhere to the rules and regulations they also divulge interest in the subordinate as an individual. Leader C believes that the employees must have a passion for their work and must love what they do. Leader C believes this will translate to a great working environment and will result in the workers doing a better job which, in turn, helps the company succeed and do well. Leader C is a motivator. He believes that small acts of kindness (such as remembering their birthday) will help the worker feel more important to the company. They will feel appreciated and valued. Leader Cs subordinates genuinely like their leader and thus wish to see him as well as the company succeed.
If the executive passed over the reins to Leader B in this scenario, the company would not prosper as much as it possibly could. The workers would do just enough to get the job done. They would not go above and beyond. They would make sure to get the job done because they know Leader B would punish them for their failures, but the passion would not be there. The desire and the drive to please their boss and to see the company prosper would be lacking.
