It may be true that legalization will not prevent an opioid abuse epidemic, but we must be fair about where the evidence stands and allow it to continue to be evaluated. We cannot be sure if that will increase heroin use or increase meth use in young people but if legalization does not impact heroin use then the need for our community has increased with the increased use of this drug. But with this in mind I don’t hold any firm conclusion about the effectiveness of legalization. The use of drugs cannot be ruled out. We’re talking about people. We’re also talking about these individuals, and the young adults we teach, but it is also about their parents, their grandparents, their teachers, their communities. Not only that but it appears to work better for all of us than it does for most of us. You know that. So we want the public to feel the pain of drug abuse, and the public to feel safer in the face of it.
