As life expectancy increases, workers may delay retirement, effectively increasing the working population. Second and third careers will become common, as more people make mid-life changes in profession. Two-income families will be the norm, increasing disposable wealth and reshaping family life and gender roles. For all these busy people, time will be the most precious commodity.
Values are changing. Young people growing up in comfortable affluence are placing increased importance on economic success. Consumerism is still growing rapidly and brand awareness is beginning at earlier ages. For many, work is simply a means to support their spending and lifestyle choices. The work ethic is diminishing, and employee loyalty may be transient and fragile in a generation familiar with corporate downsizing and increased career changes.
Attitudes to authority are also changing, largely through education and our exposure to a critical and irreverent Media. Now, technology offers tantalising opportunities for increased political participation by the masses. In essence, people as employees and voters will respond to the way they are treated and respect will need to be earned.
