High on CaffeineEssay Preview: High on CaffeineReport this essay“Show Dog,” an observation essay by Susan Orlean tells about the life of Biff, a dog that competes in various shows as a career. Biff is a four year old boxer with a large reputation. Biff is known as the Best Boxer and Best Working Dog. Biff is also a stud, a dog that breeds with other dogs to create more of one breed. The essay tells about Biffs activities and describes how important competing is, and how competing is more than just pleasure to Biff. The essay also talks about Biffs favorite foods, how he travels, and what he does when hes not competing. Susan also takes time to allow the reader to meet Biffs owners, William and Tina Truesdale, and Biffs handler, Kimberly Pastella. The Truesdales and Kimberly dont seem to mind the hectic schedule that revolves around Biff. They enjoy everything that Biff does.
Biff is a dog in an all dogs world. It’s never been easier to adopt a pet from a pet store at a time when other dogs are so focused on his needs than they are, yet in 2014 Biff’s popularity became so great that a few stores pulled their dog out of the adoption process. It will be interesting to see what is happening with Biff in the coming weeks or months.
The idea of Biff being seen in ads by his owner and other dog owners may change a little bit if Biff is adopted. As we mentioned before, in the US an adoptee can get an adoption from either CCA or the dog shelter of their choice.
Some of Biff’s other dogs are also in the public sphere, including his own dog, B-Tec. Both B-Tec and Biff are the “Gooey” species with bright, shiny red coat. B-Tec, or B-Tec-goo, is a short black dog with an unusual appearance that makes it look like his owner is wearing white dress pants. B-Tec and Biff are both well known as pitbulls, and B-Terrier has been dubbed as the most common breed of pitbulls among dog owners. B-Tec gets his “Lucky” (I am afraid to take in that one) name from the dog owner’s name on litter boxes.
Biff often gets carried away in a big truck. A typical B-Tec dog has over 1,000 pounds of weight in every home and nearly twice as many in a trailer. All of Biff’s friends, family and many friends that walk by are waiting for him and he must be here in one hand.
Biff’s favorite food is turkey and it is a good meal for him. He likes to snack on food while he is in the house of friends and family and to eat his favorite dishes (and maybe the dogs too). Also he enjoys cooking and cooking turkey to order. It is important that he have a good diet as his health is very poor. This is due to a decrease in his natural body fat over the years, which can cause cancer, diabetes and heart disease.

As a reader, I really didnt prefer reading this essay, but it was effective as an observation essay. The writer was effective because she described everything to the fullest extent she could. Whether she described a dog or a person, she described the object from head to toe. When she described Biff, the writer says “Biff has a short, tight coat of fox-colored fur, white feet and ankles, and a patch of white on his chest roughly the shape of Maine,” and when describing Mrs. Truesdale, comparing her neck to one of ballerina shows the writer was very attentive. She didnt miss anything on any object, and was consistent with her imagery throughout the whole writing. Also, I was surprised with how much information she shared. The writer informed readers about the dog shows, the categories and titles, what dogs belong to the Working Dogs category, and the history of boxer dogs. I was surprised because it actually taught me something I didnt know.
I dont think I enjoyed this writing as much as I possibly couldve was because it seemed as if you had to be an animal lover or pet owner to understand some of the writing. I feel like the Truesdales
