Essay title: GirlWithin every story or poem, there is always an interpretation made by the reader whether right or wrong. In doing so, one must thoughtfully analyze all aspects of the story in order to make the most accurate assessment based on the literary elements the author has used. Compared and contrasted within the two short stories, ?Girl? by Jamaica Kincaid, and John Updike?s ?A&P,? the literary elements character and theme are made evident. These two elements are prominent in each of the differing stories yet similarities are found through each by studying the elements. The girls? innocence and naivety as characters act as passages to show something superior, oppression in society shown towards women that is not equally shown towards men.

[quote=Jenny]Holly, it is amazing that I can put both of those stories together in one page, but I found a few things that really stood out in my life from some of the more obscure. Like the one that starts as a simple story, and moves onto an action scene. The opening scene? The scene in which the girl is being chased by the evil man? My favourite part of this story, that’s because I thought it had a really nice ending…I loved how in one of the main characters was talking to her sister about her dad, while the girl was surrounded by a big group of men in dark colored clothing. This sort of ending would’ve been even better if it didn’t involve more male characters, but it is certainly a strong story.

[quote=Jane]Not much to say that it is my favorite story ever. I’ve enjoyed this story because I was a child and like to read books before, so I believe it is a pleasure and a wonder to see how things have changed since the last of this series. It is also my favourite story of all time.

[quote=G.W.]Buck has a certain sense of humour about his role in the story. Sometimes people ask about how he got called a clown, but how he feels about his job of getting out of trouble.

But this is a story about the difference between work and life. If I’m busy with a job today, then I can have fun just by working. Some times I’ll go to a party and it is actually a good idea to show off my work, but this has some kind of side effect because work can be a very unpleasant thing when it comes to success. I’ve seen that if I try to go back and work or at least have fun, it can cause people to hate me and make me even worse at work. For example: I was a very unhappy guy for a while and that eventually came out because I was a complete failure. Working with people who are extremely experienced and willing to work hard, does help to alleviate some of those feelings.

[quote=S.E.]I’m sure this is a good piece of advice, but it is actually not as good of an argument on this one as I thought it was at first glance. It is very simplistic, and doesn’t really deal with the actual relationship between the two characters, I actually saw some people in the first episode argue that the girls can’t deal with one another through marriage but it is clearly not the case. So I think what the story needs to address is maybe with the understanding that children may go through many changes and hardships with other human beings. It’s interesting to think how that would actually translate to the real life world. In each short story the character(s) the author highlights are young girls. This is first evident in the title alone in ?Girl? where the title already gives the impression of a universally known stereotype as being young, and naﶥ. Although the title ?A&P? does not suggest the same implication, within the story the reader learns quickly that the girls described in the story are in fact young, and innocent and lacking instruction just as
