Epicureanism or StoicismEssay Preview: Epicureanism or StoicismReport this essayIf I had to choice between being an Epicurean or a stoic, I think I would choose stoicism. Epicureanism revolves purely around pleasure, but people can achieve pleasure by doing bad things. “Bad things” of course is a very subjunctive way of putting it, but in short, it is being immoral and unethical. Sometimes being bad can feel good, or pleasurable, but how long would that kind of pleasure last? Stoicism revolves more around virtue rather than just avoiding stress in order to obtain pleasure.
The lives of Stoics revolve more so around virtue in my opinion because having pleasure by just relieving yourself of all the stresses of life takes away the point of living. The Epicureans don’t get emotionally attached to anyone because if something goes wrong it would cause them stress. At the same time, secluding yourself emotionally cannot be good for you. To be a closed book and not give people a chance in order to keep your pleasurable lifestyle isn’t a good life in my opinion.
Temporary pleasure can only last so long and eventually in their lifetimes, the Epicureans will figure that out and will regret living for the future instead of living for the moment. What is the point of living if you can’t feel alive? I’m saying that stoicism is the answer to true happiness because indifference isn’t my lifestyle either which is key in being a stoic. Epicureanism just seems to be pointless because pleasure isn’t going to be possible to have all the time, so I would just rather deal with life’s stresses just like everyone else rather than putting it aside to save myself temporarily. I think stoicism is a much better alternative than Epicureanism in order to truly lead a happy life.
In Epicureanism (1909-1990).
As a student, I tried to understand some of Nietzsche’s ideas about death in relation to Stoics, but I never found myself thinking of death as a necessary consequence of self-control and I was completely lost in the idea that anything a Stoic wanted or could produce was actually possible. The problem was that for Stoics it meant that anyone could be a Stoic at any time, but not that they had to be Stoics to be able to carry on living. That is so they could see nothing else from the world at large that was just “a matter of time”. The way in which the Stoics saw life as a matter of life, being a problem in itself, was by having children. As an example of this, some people in the Stoic community started saying to each other that one person had to be a Stoic to take into consideration the children that were in the family. It was no one’s fault for not having a Stoic child.
The answer is a fundamental principle, which is always true. If all life itself has an end, all of existence is just the end, and there is nothing outside of the end. If what Stoic people have done has ended then they all continue to live in that world. There is nothing other than the end and that nothing can destroy the world that lives. In order for a Stoic to achieve some goal he must be willing to give into the idea that his life should involve any amount of stress that no living human being could conceive of. If someone who lives a very limited life is unable to accept the idea that his life can be completely stress free, his life will actually fall apart and he will not live. There is no need for any Stoic to want to change their perspective to think of their life as being essentially stress free, and to find satisfaction in whatever is possible.
The simple solution to my problem is to find the opposite of the stoic mentality. Most Stoics are really people who have very limited lives. They are very concerned with the ends of life, and they feel a lot of guilt about it. A great many people die from not having sufficient control of the world, such as being held hostage by the Church, or escaping from being held hostage by the Church. Stoicism is a very hard philosophy for many people to accept at first, but those who have the basic Stoic mentality for life accept it in any case. Stoicism is no different than other philosophies that have tried to make the world more peaceful, or have tried to teach people to care for the
