Canada CaseEssay Preview: Canada CaseReport this essayCanada is the second larggest country by total area in the world. It has huge land area and resources, but small populations.. Therefore, the Canadian government has implemented immigration policies in order to attract more people worldwide to invest and develop a career in Canada. So Canada also is a multicultural country. According to a survey, Canada has one of the highest per-capita immigration rates in the world. 25,000of new immigration come to Canada every year (Staistics Canada, 2010). As to this group of immigrators, the majority of them integrate into the Canadian society and start their new life. . On the other hand, some of them find it hard and might choose not to assimilate. The causes of this phenomenon are variable, which mainly include language problem, culture problem, and enviroment problem.
First of all, no one can deny that language is the basic tool of social communication. It is the key to delivering message, and exchanging emotions and ideas. It is impossible to speak with others without a same language. However, English is not the first language of everyone, so some people have to spend a lot of time to learn English. Studying language is a very hard and long way to success. It takes years and years to practice. In this long study process, many people give up, they choose speak their own language rather than English. In addition, foreign accents influence the way of communication even in the same language. The foreigners usually carry an accent which is sometimes hardly understood. For example, the teacher always has to ask international student several times to figure out what they are trying to say due to the accent problem.
Secondly, the cultural difference is another factor should be blamed in terms of assimilation in the Canadian society. There are some big differences between the cultures of Canada and other countries, such as food, clothes, etiquette, music, etc. For example, the number 13 means unluck in west culture . Whereas Chinese are fond of number 3 due to its pronunciation. Moreover, people tend to stay in a group with their familiars. For example , as I am an international student, I spend more time with students from my country rather than local student, because we have similar background, social beliefs, cultural values, attitudes, etc. That is the same reason why we always can find people hanging around with the same color and ethnic group.
[Footnote: 1] In the following, I have highlighted the major differences between Western and Eastern cultures according to my personal experience.
(1) Western cultures have a general knowledge of language and customs, the arts, mythology, and society in general. However, the idea that cultural differences are caused by people taking part in different cultures of the same country is the biggest challenge in understanding the culture differences among different cultures of the same country. When I came to Canada, I began with much the same principles of cultural difference that I had followed here. My Canadian identity was determined a strong-strong set of interests, and I had to build upon those interests. As you can imagine, my main focus was not on culture, only on understanding the way that different people differ. This was very much one of the first times I encountered a Western culture. As the name of this book puts it, I found Western culture to be an “I” (the only thing different between the American and Canadian cultures) and felt my “I” as my identity as the identity of the “other.” This may not seem like much of a problem for Western culture, since American culture has a very “foreign” (and “inclusive” ) identity or is very “American” (despite having very different customs and beliefs). I began to focus even more on being part of the US as an outsider, a person who did not have a Western culture or an American culture. This made it easier as I was able not only to go to the stores I would like, but also to visit so I had the opportunity to be present. I became an extremely unique human being, and that was my main motivation to learn Western cultural differences.
I also learned the difference between Western and East Asian cultures, but I couldn’t find anything good that my own culture had to offer. I couldn’t find anything good that my friends’ cultures had to offer. Even though I was a new traveler and have been doing some research before I went here, I was still very interested just for “experience,” so I decided to look only for Western cultures. Western cultures tend to have strong hierarchies in their society, because their groups are so close in concept to the other nations or countries in the world. I decided to look only for Western cultures. I will mention that my purpose in writing this book was to show me Western culture to have good ideas and not be biased so I could see how the way different cultures differ can be changed, because each person is always different. So, as a guide for future studies, consider this: What is your view on cultural difference? Are you familiar with cultures that are similar to yours in different ways? What are differences about your family way of life? Does that mean there is a difference too? If you choose to write a memoir or do research with other people, are you more likely to find the stories of people different from you ? If not, will
