Lord of the Flies Essay
In the book “Lord of the flies” one of the main characters, Ralph, asks “Why do things break up the way they do?” In the book there are many things that contribute to Jack’s betrayal and the boys turning on eachother. Out of all the things that happened though, I believe that there are three main reasons as to why things ended up like they did.
Throughout the whole book Ralph and Jack were always on different pages. While Ralph was more focused on how to leave the island and coming up with ideas on how to get rescued Jack was more focused on how to survive and thrive on the island. Their intentions were different as Ralph was more on the side of leaving and Jack was more on the side of staying. This is howed through the things that they prioritize throughout the book.
“I was talking about smoke! Don’t you want to be rescued? All you can talk about is pig, pig, pig!” (Golding 57)
In the quote above Ralph is getting into an argument with Jack because Jack and his hunters aren’t contributing at all towards getting anything done in the island. All they’re doing is trying to look for meat. Although Jack hunting for a pig has a deeper meaning I think that it also shows how Ralph and Jack aren’t really in sync with each other. “-they get up high. High up and in the shade, resting during the heat like the cows at home.” (Golding 57) While Jack and Ralph are talking Ralph thinks they’re talking about fire, but really Jack was talking about the pig.
The lack of communication between all of the boys is also another contributing factor towards the falling out that they had. Since the beginning of the book we can see the lack of communication that the boys have. This begins to show as early as Chapter 3 when Jack and Ralph have their first argument publicly.“I was talking about smoke! Don’t you want to be rescued? All you can talk about is pig, pig, pig!” (Golding 57) The miscommunication that happens through out causes many problems that could have been avoided had they better communication.
“Fancy thinking the beast was something you could hunt and kill! You knew, didn’t you? I’m a part of you? Close, close, close! I’m th reason why it’s no go? Why things are the way they are?”(Golding 164)
At this point in the story Simon has realized that there is no physical beast in the island but rather one that is inside of them. He realizes that the “beast” they thought they had seen was actually the body of a dead parachutist. When he goes to tell the rest of the group he is beaten and killed by them. As Simon was coming down , he trying to tell them what he had discovered but they mistaken him for the beast and kill him, including Ralph and Piggy. The lack of communication going on in the group is why things start to crumble and the boys eventually turn on eachother.
Since the beginning, when the boys chose Ralph over Jack
