Racism is one of the worlds major issues today. Many people are not aware of how much racism still exists in schools workforces in Canada, and anywhere else where social lives are occurring. It is obvious that racism is bad as it was many decades ago but it sure has not gone away. Racism very much exists and it is about time that people need to start thinking about the solutions to this matter. Many people believe that it depends on if a person was brought into the world as a racist or not but that is not the case at all. In fact, an individual cannot be born a racist but only learn to become one as they grow from child to adulthood. Due to increasing number of racial discrimination in Canada, institutions and government in Canada should involve some educational and social programs in order to decrease or even eradicate racial discrimination.
In the beginning, disappointment is a very common cause of racism. If one is having some sort of a social problem, they tend to get very angry with people who are not even concerned with their situation. For instance, when a person is having a tough time economically, they find it easy to blame immigrants for taking away their jobs or creating fewer opportunities (Abanes 1992). This is very easy to make but when someone makes this, it usually can provide to hate towards any people who are less. The psychological factor is also common problem that can be found as the root of racism. People with tough childhood may sometimes produce anger and hate towards others (Hayes 1995). This kind of person usually wants to dominate others as these qualities may cause to. In these types of situations, one can only picture of what that people may sense. However, in some cases decline is only created by the mentality. Change is the only thing that people cannot stop at all times. People are more comfortable around the people whom they know and they find it hard to adapt to a culture that they are not familiar with. Since 1987, Chinese have been settling in Vancouver, and each third person was Chinese. This fast change was not acceptable for many people who moved out from that because they could not live in a “white town” again (Rupet 1996). On the other hand, person does not have to be a racist to increase the racism around them. For example, silence does not mean that it can prevent racism but it may cause it. Studies show that people do not want to speak to their friends or family who like to express their racist views. The report shows that such silence pushes the racists to say their opinion to direct violence (Rupet 1996). Most of the causes is that it all based on some kind of stereotype, which develops discrimination. A lot of black people may sense that someone limit them when they have ability as “good athletes and musicians”(Hayes 1995). This makes it very difficult for black people to be taken seriously in any other fields. It means that disappointment is the root of all causes of racism and such disliking is produced people who are worried because of the troubles they are experiencing. When extremists such as “skinheads”(white racists with clean shaved scalps) create violence or bombings, usually it is because someone thinks like this. When politicians and radio talk show hosts complain that there is too much immigrates, there are a lot of people who are agreeing with it. Torontos own Ernst Zundel believes that if there were no Jewish people, there would not be any Holocaust. This person is known for his views and he has huge influence on Canadian people who have some racism feelings. (Lethbridge 1997). Racist groups look to these people and follow them, people who show their hate publicly. People believe that only extremist bring up their children in racist way, but it not the truth. Once there was the group, who wanted to start the “racial holy war” against blacks, Jews, and Asians, and they thought that because of these people they have troubles. (Randall 1994). Most groups are becoming more sophisticated, and they are making lots of racism actions. In 1995, Canadas reform party immigration critic said that there is connection between violence murders and immigrates, while the U.S. representative, blamed immigrants of “murdering our children” (Whitton 1998). There are many groups such as the Anti-racist action (ARA) who use violence to achieve their goals. The ARA even damaged the home of spokesperson Gary Schipper, in June of 1993. In 1995, an ARA set fire to the home of Holocaust denier Ernst Zundel (Hayes 1995). The media cannot ignore these activities, and in their new they show the thoughts of those groups. Effect or the media can be used for both for and against racism but extremists have more advantage on the media than the anti racism groups. When racist groups talk about their negative opinions in public, the media will translate it everywhere, but if it is an anti-racism group that is talking about solutions to prevent racism, it is not the fact that TV or radio will translate it. Finally, the most frequent cause of racism in Canada is institutions. The justice system is not work enough and studies show a lot of discrimination in Canadian prisons. But that people are those who prevent injustices. The report of the “Commission on Systemic Racism” in the Ontario criminal justice system says that it is the police, judges, and lawyers, who are largely responsible for that unfairness of the criminal justice system. It is these people who make decisions based on stereotypes. The report also says that black people have less opportunity to be granted bail. Black people 27 times more be imprisoned before their trials on charges of drug trafficking and about 20 times more are incarcerated for drug possession charges (Buford 1996). It seems that the police stop black people more often than whites. Police has released more whites than blacks after being charged (Johnson 1999). Blacks are more likely to be denied pretrial bail. The educational system also supports the racism. A lot of people say that black people, who are not so smart, usually are being putted to lower academic levels by teachers (Whitton 1998). Also, some people say, that because of history of black people, teachers leave black students without a sense of identity and self esteem. In 1994, Toronto Board of Education study confirmed that black and Portuguese students are represented into the lower academic levels. The Royal commission stated there is a “crisis in black education” in Ontario (Johnson 1999).
One of the possible solutions of the problem is including by government of Canada anti-racism lessons in order to prevent racism. Education is the key to change attitudes too. It is best that it starts in Canadian schools. The Nova Scotia government spent a million dollars in 1995 to establish programs to try to end racism (Demsey 1992). Including
