After reading Fredrick Douglass writing “Learning to Read and Write”, I have come to the realization that he is a highly motivated individual. Because of his position in life as a slave he was deprived an education. But being who he his, he was not going to sit down and allow society to make him an ignorant black male. He was going to make a difference in his life by taking up the challenge to read and write. In order to attain these tools, he found creative learning techniques. From bribing children with bread to playing “Im better than you” games.
I find it so ironic that in todays time, a lot of people takes their education for granted. Not wanting to go to school, or not willing to work hard in order to be successful in school. Some people are not as bless as most of us are, where it is a must that we go to school. Where as in other countries, you get what you get.
Fredrick Douglass has set high goals for himself. He did not follow what society had planned for him. Because he had set such high aspirations he was able to free himself from slavery, and better himself and his former slaves.
Fredrick Douglass story should be a lesson learned from everyone. He sort of exemplifies how people should set their own goals and live up to them. Do not live up to other people expectations of yourself. Do not let anybody define your life for you. Define it for yourself, and live up to it. A simple quote to end this will be “Do not be a victim of silence, accept no ones definition of life..”
