Same Sex Marriage
There are so many issues that people could argue over. These arguments could range from interpretations of history, politics, and religion. But the one that seems to be making headlines quite a bit recently would be the topic of legalizing same-sex marriage. There are many people who see same-sex marriage as no big issue. If you love someone why not be with them for the rest of your life, and reap all the benefits of a heterosexual marriage. The reason I have chosen to write about same-sex marriage is because I think it is a cause worth fighting for. I think that if heterosexual men and women can find that special someone to make them miserable for the rest of their lives then why can’t gays lesbians and bisexuals have the same thing, just with someone who has the same genitailia. I would consider this to be an extremely important topic because homosexuality is become more of a norm, the public is starting to look at homosexuality with more of an open mind. Why should the gays, lesbians and bisexuals not be allowed to marry because some extreme Baptist minister from middle of nowhere Mississippi doesn’t believe in it? I don’t in pushing religion down other people’s throats but that doesn’t stop the Baptist minister from standing on his soap box preaching the “word of the lord” outside of a city hall in California. But I digress. The legalization of same-sex marriage is very important. There are so many rights and benefits that same-sex couples do not have access to. There are 1,400 legal rights that heterosexual couples have access to. For instance, say that Frank a partner in a same-sex relationship has a terminal illness and doctors think that there is another procedure that might help. But John, is lying in the hospital bed is incapacitated due to the extreme amount of pain from the illness. Dylan, the partner that is fine has no say in what to do. All Dylan can do is sit there and watch John, the person that he loves, wither and moan in pain. Watching the one that he loves die before his very eyes, watching the love of his life die way before their time, all because Dylan doesn’t have the legal right to tell the doctors to perform what could be a life saving procedure. It is situations like that, that make me believe that same-sex marriage is something worth fighting for, because no one should ever be put in that.
One could say that the problem of same-sex marriage exists because of people who think that being a homosexual is “wrong” or that these “faggots are an abomination”. Others say that the problem is because marriage is seen as a sacred union between a man and a woman, and that if that is changed then it will open the flood gates to fight for legalization of polygamy and marriage of a man and a farm animal, like a goat. Now that last line is very extreme, but there are people who believe that it will happen. Those that believe that it will undermine the sanctity of marriage think that by undermining
