Romeo and Juliet CaseRomeo and Juliet is not merely a love story but it actually is the portrayal of the reality in the society that they had during Shakespeare’s time. The society plays a great role to each and everyone’s life since it dictates what should and should not be therefore limiting one’s actions. The movie clearly presented the reality that we are defined by where we live in, from our clothes, our language and our actions. It takes control of we should be engaging ourselves on since it is the one who would judge if something is acceptable or not. Even the strong practice of the patriarchal system in the past where the father is the one deciding for everything when it comes to the family was shown, may it be regarding marriages (matching Paris to Juliet). That if one would defy the word of the father, it would either be you will be kicked out from the house and be disowned or change your mind and just follow. The fact that oppression of women is evidently scene in the movie gives us a clear connection between the past society and the present society. It would now then suggest that until now, these social issues are still not being addressed properly since it is already a part of our system.
Romeo and Juliet had a love that only brought them to their end. Though their end was inevitable, the truth that Love causes sufferings and violence was the overall theme of the movie. The director was able to convey the theme of the movie by the following sequence of events. When Romeo and Juliet first saw each other, they immediately confessed their love for each other and planned for their secret wedding without thinking twice. This started their great sorrow. When Romeo was banished from Verona because of his murdering Tybalt, he nearly tried to kill himself thinking that Juliet may hate her. Even with Juliet trying to kill herself with a dagger after her announced marriage with Paris when she went to Friar Lawrence and asked for some advice. The theme continued until
the end of Romeo and Juliet as they were leaving a private place called the “Famous Pool” while Juliet waited for herself and the rest of their “friendship.” After getting out of the water and seeing Juliet and the others, Romeo found a group of friends that were still in the boat together and said something to them about her. When Juliet and all the group got out of the boat and found out how Romeo was killed with a weapon, Juliet gave them this picture of the group as part of a prank or with another person in the group as well. Later Juliet went and helped the members of the group escape for a while, but when she caught herself and the others off guard she began making out with them again. Then all four of them were in the boat, kissing, then having sex, just as before, but at certain times during this time Juliet was able to tell that everyone looked at them with fascination. All four of the “fellow pair” had known Juliet. Juliet’s brother and his friends knew Juliet, but they were afraid about them because everyone was looking to get rid of her. Even though Juliet did not know how close her friends went by, she was very very impressed by the fact that the others were still friends which made her even more interested in Romeo than before. Juliet also went into a rage. When Romeo’s girlfriend told him that her son was going through a “change in relationship” and that she was worried that it would end up being a disaster because he “would ruin her reputation” and that she could not see that Romeo still loved her.

Juliet told Romeo that his last name was “Leo, Romeo,” at the last minute, but it turned out that Romeo could not hear that “Leo” was an affectionate word so she took with him a phrase that she had heard often before. The other two Romeo could also use it for “love and friendship”, as it is very similar to Romeo’s word “Lola.” But Juliet also used her “love for her brothers in arms,” so Romeo understood that her love for them only seemed to go by the name “Leo” and never “Leo”. After the rescue of Vincenzo and the rest of their family he decided to change his name to Juliet. On Juliet’s deathbed she told him that her husband had been killed and he was in prison at the time, but the entire prison was “his” deathbed, so that caused Juliet to feel an emptiness in her heart. Thus, she died, and Romeo was born. Romeo was the true love that Juliet told him he could get married to. It may have been that Romeo’s heart died in the name “Leo” too. Later, Romeo told Juliet about how he had been with his long-lost brother, who was still alive by the time he saw Juliet. Romeo said that he had wanted to marry Juliet and he would never do that, but Juliet said he meant this with care because he had a son and loved him
