My first evaluation is on the Daily News. This is Mondays’ issue. It costs fifty cents. The front cover has a large cover photo of a NYC subway, which is tagged by the headline “Bad guys Derailed”. Subway crime is at an all time low, which is a positive cover story for once. Most papers I read have a very depressing cover story. There is also a scratch game inside the paper. It is advertised on the cover which makes people lean towards purchasing it. Apparently you scratch a card to see what numbers you have and the winning ones will be announced on channel 4 (NBC) at 11 p.m. This helps NBC get more viewers for advertisers to purchase airtime during that slot.
The main articles are really the only ones that have photos to accompany them. All of the photos are in black and white. Nothing very bias about the articles, just covering what had happened Sunday. The cover story is on page 5, which again has a giant black and white picture that almost takes up the entire page. To the left of the article one of the writers decided to write an article on the rudeness of some subway riders. It makes for easy reading and brings up situations that readers can relate too. There are some quotes posted around the page from readers suggesting their “pet peeves” of subway riders.
The major articles are most concerned with city news, rather than long island.
Like most tabloid papers, there is a sports section. Usually the back cover has photos and headlines that are all sports related. This particular newspaper has a large color photo with an NFL player looking very upset. His team, the NY Giants, lost on Sunday, which I find interesting because the other NY football team, the Jets, won, and they received a small color insert on top of the main photo. This shows you which team the paper favors, or the editors decided that since the Giants lost
