Not Perfect but Works for Students
Not Perfect but Works for StudentsDue to the speed of development in China, the education becomes more and more important in China. In China, the main education system is exam-oriented education system. Exam-oriented system deals with exam-based education model, evaluate ate students on the effectiveness of the examination results. After Chinese nine-year volunteer education, the students have to take high school and university entrance examination. Students and whole family feel exhausted by the pressure of the examinations. However, educator Parankimalil John thinks the education is existing by moulding the healthy physically and psychology of the students, and let the students become a completely person. (Parankimalil, 2012). Therefore, some experts said the Chinese exam-oriented education should be banned. But this system maybe not perfect, but itâs also works for students to develop their studying and thinking abilities. The test system always has its disadvantages such as ignore studentsâ interest, too much pressure and limit studentsâ mind. The senior high school entrance examination and university entrance examination play a very important role of all studentsâ study life. The higher score in the examination means the better study environment, more experienced teachers and better resume. Therefore, most of the parents just focus on the score and ignore cultivate childrenâs habits and deny their interest. Moving on the model of the education, the Chinese school usually uses cramming method of teaching. The teachers give a lot of homework to the students, and the school usually arranges exam almost every week. From the data collected by China Youth Research in 2009, the Chinese high school students spend 11.7 hours each day, 9.67 hours for middle school students, and primary school studentsâ study time is about 8.46 hours. (Zhang, 2013). And most of the exam questions have fixed modes because most questions have the exact answer, and the minor mistakes students also lose marks. As a consequence, this teaching method and the examination both of them limit the mind of the students. Â According to the test did by Mandelson, the Chinese studentsâ way to solve the problem is totally different from the North American studentsâ. (Mendleson, 2011). The Chinese students would like to ask their teachers instead of working by themselves. Therefore, Chinese students who accept the exam-oriented education lack independent thinking. However, let China change its education system immediately is impossible. Firstly, the exam-oriented education system has already been used for thousands of years. And their parents also grew up with this system, so they use this education method to educate their children. Â From Chinese ancient time, the government had held âimperial competitive examinationâ every year and depended on the score to ascertain their position. Until now, students take entrance examination to decide their school. Or though taking the civil service examination to find the government jobs. Secondly, in 2009, the population of the Chinese students who accept the nine yearsâ voluntary education is eighteen million. Every class will have 40-50 students, and the teacher will teach about 2-3 classes every semester. Itâs impossible to let the teacher set different study plans for different students. Therefore, teachers usually through the homework and exam to make sure most of the students understand the knowledge. And according to the results to set their teaching plans. Finally, although some exam questions are limited, the exam question also has different level to test studentsâ ability and exercise studentsâ mind. For example, the math test usually includes the words problems, geometry problems and algebra problems.
