Governments and Their Control over EducationEssay Preview: Governments and Their Control over EducationReport this essaySept. 13th, 2005History is taught to students all around the world, but no matter where people learn it from it is always somewhat different. Societies will always view history from their own perspectives. The reason is obvious. People want to know how they came to be here and consequently learn more about their origins. This is why when mandatory history is taught it is always national history; because the governments can focus in on the main events from their own views and in many cases portray themselves as heroes.
In a way Id have to say I agree with this. I love being Canadian, after all, but then I think to myself, “But what if Im the one whos been brainwashed all this time?” Over the years Ive learnt about the many different ways in which Canada has participated in wars and how Canada was created. This, however, is all taught to me by a government funded education system. Everything taught to us is what the government wants us to learn. In fact, here in Quebec you must learn “History of Quebec and Canada,” to get into CEGEP. This is, of course, to learn about the wonderful French colonists who discovered this land and shaped our home, Quebec. Well throughout the year my teacher forgot to mention the part where we gave the Native Americans little boxes filled with blankets and clothes taken off disease-ridden corpses and told them these were gifts. Nor did I hear much about how we stole this land from the Native Americans. And even though my father told me these things my History teachers did not. It wasnt an obligatory part of the course. I dont blame my teachers; its how the Quebec government wants it. Its how every government wants it. Governments dont want people seeing the horrible things they have done. Just like in Germany Im sure the teachings of the holocaust are much different from what we learn here. Although I dont see how an event like that can be taught to be less harsh unless its not taught at all.
Personally I have a very strong patriotic stand for my country. I love Canada and I wouldnt want to ever live in another country. But why do I love Canada? I cant even think of any reasons off the top of my head. And so Im forced to wonder, do I really love Canada of my own free accord or has this patriotic sense been implanted into my unconscious since childbirth? Its a lot to think about. Maybe its not even the Canadian government that has put these thoughts into my head. I grew up in Quebec, after all. Wouldnt that mean Id be more likely to see Quebec as a sovereign nation? Perhaps it was my own parents who planted these seeds in my mind. My family and friends whom Ive known
The Canadian Press published an article that I can’t find on my own that I would trust. I am very thankful that I read it. My name came up, but I don’t recall being in Canada for the past eight years. I just knew I was looking for some good news on what the Canadian government must do to stop the spread of terrorism in my country. I remember my parents discussing the dangers as a 9/11 hijacker, and they told me I was “very scared”. I was like “what the heck, what the hell is going on”? They told me I could die by the time I was 17 in a plane crash, and I was almost there. It was a complete shock to a young man to think that there would be so much fear and fear in our country, which is the great strength of this country. But they told me I had some much-needed freedom. I was afraid, but I also was so happy and full of positive things. After some time, I managed to read an account by an American journalist. He went to Ottawa from a city in Ontario where I live and wrote about what he has known for some years. He also told an American journalist I know very well, but he did not elaborate, and in fact didn’t explain who he told his story to. It was after that story that my mother and several of my friends learned the truth about 9/11 and everything. It wasn’t until after it happened that the Canadian government started publishing a book called “What Happened to Our Nation,” which was written by American journalist Seymour Hersh. Hersh worked in the CIA for about seven years and it was on that show that he knew all about the 9/11 Commission Report. There was only one issue, there was no way in hell Hersh could have read it as written. And the next month, we learned that there is a new book titled “Inside the FBI: The Most Outrageous Secret CIA Plot to Destroy America in 15 Years.” Here is the link:
