Though the city of Johnstown is small, containing a population of 8,511 people as of the 2000 census, it is a town of great importance. Johnstown is located within Fulton County, New York. It was named after John Johnson, the son of the founder Sir William Johnson. The city was founded in 1760 by Johnson, the Superintendent of Indian Affairs and a Major General in the British forces during the French and Indian War. He received the city for his services. The town was early involved in the tanning of leather and the manufacture of leather goods, mostly gloves. One major importance of Johnstown is that the city was home to Elizabeth Cady Stanton of the woman’s rights movement.

The city of Johnstown is located midway between Albany to east and Utica to the west. It is located right off the New York State Thruway and can be reached through three different exits. Route 30A is the main route through the city of Johnstown. Johnstown is only five miles
