Engineering Is an Important Profession in a Developing Country
Engineering is an important profession in a developing country. The work of engineers shapes the physical environment of society and it can bring magnificent impact to the economic growth and nation development (Multimedia University, 2013). Thus, it is essential that engineers should always perform their tasks to the highest standards of professional principle. The Code of Professional Conduct is a listed of professional behavior should be practiced by the entire professional engineer in the country.
The BEM guidelines for Code of Professional Conduct consist of five main sections and 27 sub-sections. The five main sections are listed and elaborate below:
Section 1.0 A Registered Engineer shall at all times hold paramount the safety, health and welfare of the public.
Engineers should always concern and consider the safety, health and welfare of the public as the first priority for any tasks or projects that perform by the engineer. Project that might endanger the public should be terminated immediately even if the project is very profitable or advantageous. Besides that, this section consists of 5 sub-sections that further and more detailed explanation on the Section 1.
Section 2.0 A Registered Engineers shall undertake assignments only if he is qualified by education and experience in the specific technical fields in which he is involved.
Engineers should not accept or agree to work on any project that is not specified in their circle of profession. Mishandling or lack of experience in a particular project could cause huge disaster and might endanger the safety, health and welfare of the public. An engineer should always performs assignment that is within their profession and consults another engineer who specific in that particular area if it is not qualified in his profession. Furthermore, this section consists of 2 sub-sections that further elaborate Section 2.
Section 3.0 A Registered Engineer shall issue public statements only in an objective and truthful manner.
