Peter Shaffer’s The Royal Hunt of the Sun depicts a dramatic vision of the failure of societyThe Royal Hunt of the Sun is a historical play based on William Prescott´s The History of the Conquest of Peru. Its main theme is the ´Search for God´as seen in the protagonist’ s mental obsession and his confrontation with Atahuallpa.Pizarro, the protagonist, finds no meaning in the established institutions such as State, church and army. Institutions that despite the fact have elevated him as a reknown explorer, he believes that they have failed him. Consequently, he finds no meaning in life. He feels the urgent need to achieve spiritual fulfillment, and is engaged in a desperate search.Pizarro’s spiritual quest is very much the concern of a modern man who has rejected the formerly accepted values and has not yet found new ones.Pizarro struggles with philosophical problems. As he is already in his middle age and he is physically exhausted, he starts considering how society has failed him. He has lost his belief in traditional values and goals, yet he cannot bear this life of suffering and pain without having hope of a truer and better world. Pizarro’s acknowleges he against th artificial and deceptive values of tradition. As he is determined to find spiritual fulfillment no matter how tired and exhausted he might feel.Peter Shaffer in The Royal Hunt of the Sun illustrates the defects of society, expressing how surppresed the individual is, and there is no room for spiritual fulfillment. Pizarro is a victim of society because he is expected to respond to the demand of it. He has ignored completely the development of his private life. So, at least at the end of his life tries to find a deeper meaning for his existence.
