Team Concept Paper
Executive Summary
-This business plan provides necessary information on the Oakland Athletics organization’s intent to relocate to the city of Portland, Oregon. This proposal explains information regarding the need to leave Oakland, a potential site for the stadium, development costs on the city and organization and it’s partners, as well as the future of and potential success for an MLB team in Oregon.
-We believe the jump to the Northwest will raise necessary net worth and value to a franchise that is financially handcuffed, add more success to the on field product and reach a new market and culture for professional baseball.
-Our proposal will be broken down into three sections:
-The Case For a Team: In this section we will examine the factors including the decision to leave Oakland, and why our organization has chosen Portland to be our future home.
-Stadium Location and Financing: In this section we will cover the economics involved with stadium’s building process as well as the economic impact a professional sports stadium will have on the local, county, and state’s governments.
-Building A Brand: This section covers the organizations new brand and identity. It will cover marketing plans and the reason this theme was selected.
Case for a Team:
Oakland is not a good town. “Visiting baseball teams don’t even stay in Oakland. The Rays stayed in San Francisco for a late-August weekend series even though they knew the Bay Bridge would be closed. It took the team bus nearly two hours to get to the Coliseum on Friday afternoon. David Price, that night’s starting pitcher, paid $202 for a cab ride. A perfectly fine full-service Marriott stands in Oakland City Center, 10 minutes from the O.co Coliseum” (Keown). Every year the Oakland Raiders threaten to leave. This poses a threat to the Athletics staying in Oakland. If the Raiders do leave, the Athletics will have to pick up the costs for the stadium left behind by the Raiders. As it is now the A’s have a low attendance in Oakland producing a small market and revenue for the team. A move to a new city may prove very beneficial to the team. The Coliseum requires some serious renovations, moving the team to a brand new stadium would be better than to keep updating their current stadium with renovations. The team’s performance right now is fairly good, however, it lacks the finances to make the team great. A move to a new city could be the financial spark the team needs, especially since the A’s wouldn’t need to leave to AL West division. This can create a rivalry between them and the Seattle Mariners which would boost fan attendance during these games. It would be impossible for A’s to move to San Jose, or to bring another sports franchise to the city because it is within the MLB 60 mile radius rule. “The Giants’ concerns about losing their share of the lucrative South Bay market are legitimateThe Giants worked hard to develop the South Bay market, just as the Orioles once worked hard to develop the D.C. market” (Rosenthal) . There is also a lack of partnership in Oakland between the A’s and businesses, so a move to a city where the economy is better off than Oakland would be beneficial to the team as well. The Golden State Warriors are leaving which is right next to where the A’s play now. This move could cause less fans to go to A’s games because Warrior fans would be following their team, thus drawing them away from Oakland. “The coming move also gives the Warriors access to a more affluent fan base. While Oakland’s median household income is nearly 10% below the state average, San Francisco’s is one of the highest in California (over $72,000). The city already supports top-flight NFL (the 49ers) and MLB (the Giants) franchises, so it’s not a stretch to think San Franciscans will show up for Warriors games in droves” (Mann).
Portland, Oregon. Found in the year 1845 by Francis Pettygrove and Amos Lovejoy. The story behind the name of Portland is intriguing. The fate of Portland was determined by a coin toss between these two men. Pettygrove ended up winning the coin toss and named it “Portland” after his hometown. Today, the city has much to offer. The economy is extremely diverse, as the city has major manufacturing, retail, wholesale and lumber corporations based in their metropolitan area. However technology is what keeps the city on its feet. According to travelportland.com, there are over 1700 technology companies based in Portland. Aside from the
