Pfm Ventures to Doubleday Country Inn and Farm
On Thursday, July 24, Harrisburg PFMers took the field at Doubleday Country Inn and Farm in scenic Perry County, Pennsylvania to play their own version of the Mid-Summer Classic. The field, nestled between acres of forest and farm land, is a real-life field of dreams. Doubleday offers baseball fans the opportunity to experience the game the way it was played before it became a multi-billion dollar business. Without the fame and fortune of todays major leaguers, participants play simply for the love of the game–the way Abner Doubleday, baseballs inventor, no doubt intended. Every player is outfitted with an “old school” uniform, including jersey, pants, hat, and socks, which conjur up images of Babe Ruth and early twentieth-century baseball. Just like major leaguers past and present, players also take their hacks with wooden bats, a privilege some have never enjoyed. The major attraction of Doubleday Country Inn and Farm is the chance to meet a retired major leaguer, who serves as the umpire and occasional pinch hitter. In the past, PFMers have had the privilege of meeting former Major League All-Star George Foster and Hall of Famer Harmon Killebrew. Philadelphia fans who took part in this years game
