What recommendations would you have for her to stay focused and achieve her goal of graduating?
I would tell her that even though the money that she is being offered for a new job would help her family; think about how much more money she could make by having her education. I would tell her that even though she did not do well on her last examination that it will be okay. That we all make mistakes, but its for us to keep are head up and pursue what we know we can do. I would advise her in order to stay focused she has to continue to tell herself that she can do this and set goals that maybe next time she will be better prepared for her test. I would also advise her that graduating is an achievement that many people do not get to experience and that if she sticks with school and graduates; instead of just working at the factory she could be a manager or supervisor at the factory.
What advice can you give him to be more successful in school? What type of self talk will help him change his thoughts and beliefs about his academic abilities?
I would tell him that even though in the past he wasnt good in algebra or biology that its called a past for a reason. This is now and the things that he was doing in the past didnt help him in those classes so its time to find some new ways of going about those subjects. I will tell him to make a schedule of when he would put his most attention to those classes and to also find a study group. This will also help him with his loneliness too. The type of self talk that I would tell him to use is positive self talk. He has to constantly tell himself no matter how hard it is that he can do it. Instead of saying to himself I know Im not going to get a good grade on this paper or test, his self talk must be I know I am going to do well on this paper or test. I will also recommend that if he doesnt do well, his self talk must be okay, I didnt do well this time but I will do better next time.”
How I visualize my goal of graduating.
Family- I picture my family in the auditorium smiling and being so proud of me. I picture my parents smiling and my mom crying tears of pride. My emotion would be joy.
Gown- I picture it hanging up on the outside of my closet, clean and starched ready for me to put it on to walk across the stage. My emotion would be relief.
Diploma- I picture me shaking the presidents hand and receiving my diploma in the other hand. My emotion would be vindication.
